Water Pump Fail
At 83,000 miles (2009 135) the water pump failed and left me stranded on the side of the road 60 miles out of town. $1350 for independent garage to replace. The brand new replacement BMW water pump failed (plastic cracked) when mechanic went for test drive. Have to wait one more day for second new water pump.

I already voted in here so I don't know how to change my vote, but mine just crapped out on me yesterday.
March 2008 build N54 135i, just under 60K miles on it. Towed to an indy but will know tomorrow if they're supplying parts or I am, b/c I can get everything from ECS for $567 shipped (including Tstat kit, coolant). Their labor rate is $96/hr, if it's a 4hr job then $384 + $567 (parts) = $951 total. |

Water pump failed on me this past weekend (7/5/2014):
2008 135i N54 58,900 miles Covered under CPO warranty Cruising down the highway and the yellow temp warning light popped on, then almost immediately the yellow light went to red and car went into limp mode. The warranty ends in September, so I guess I'm lucky it went out now. |

Those things are slippery and can break pretty easily when you drop them. 08' 135i 70k miles Replaced under platinum extended warranty. If you've actually made it past 75k on your stock waterpump just change it so you don't end up stranded. |

2008 N54 just failed on the way home from work this evening. I was lucky enough to catch it on a side street at about 10MPH and idled into a parking space within a few seconds.
Just under 60K Miles.

Dropped the Sway bar, Unscrewed the Power steering hose and moved it out of the way, removed all of the bolts except the one on the side of the radiator. drained fluid from the bottom pump hose. Pulled off last bolt(took Forever because i didn't have a socket joint.. had to borrow one)... pulled apart, put back together then ran the process to purge the system twice. started her up and good to go. Drove her to work this morning. |

Thanks for the update @pattielipp
My buddy Nic(above) said the same thing about that upper water pump bolt. What a PITA is was. I would also re-check your coolant level in a day or two. I am sure the system might need a little bit more. Check it when the engine is cold. Dackel

I paid $560 for parts (german conversion from 460 euros) and did it myself. No need for rental, took the wife's SUV ;-) . No damage to the engine since it immediately went to limp mode and shut down. In fact, going back to the 'Ring this Sunday. Car has been running fine for over a week now.

Water pump failed at around 57k miles. No sign of it failing before hand. Luckily was only around 3 miles from home so was able to limp it home after letting it cool for several hours. About $500 in parts to repair. |

My car only has 12,400 miles on it, so it doesn't say much about when one might expect a failure.
Someone might do some arithmetic and find out what is the average failure rate in miles by year and then overall. A problem is BMW might have upgraded the pump to a different design, so averages might be worthless. Another consideration is driving habits. The pumps of aggressive drivers will be worked harder. Besides the water pump, I wonder how long the timing chain, VANOS solenoids, and plugs are good for? |

well it finally decided to crap out on me..
08 135i with 77,7xx miles. Ran fine on the 2-3 mile drive to work today. Otw home right before i got to my house I hear my engine fan was blowing full force. Obviously knew something wasn't right. Ran codes and had p2e81 and p2e82. Cleared them then went on a test drive which I didn't make it 500 feet down the road and noticed a quick spike in engine temp. I hurried and turned around then pulled up and ran codes again and had the same thing. Monday was b12 kit install tuesday was professional detail this weekend is blue angels in FL. Had to cancel appointments and hopefully i can get it fixed before the weekend. |
