First thing I had to do. Previous owner left it completely without.

German Castro 0-30 in the last 2 cars. UOA's look good at 10-12k.km's(6-7k.miles). Thin for start-up with reportedly somewhat higher than 30 weight when hot. A true synthetic as opposed to the majority of "synthetics" that are really enhanced Group 3 oils as opposed to Group4 & 5 (the Germans are pretty strict about their advertising). That said we (me too) probably over obsess about brands. Recent testing by Blackstone Labs. on a Cooper S motor showed very little difference in wear metals between brands, whether synthetic or not. Their conclusion- the best oil= clean oil.

Redline 5W30, was $10 a qt delivered (to australia!) from Amazon. feels great.. no UOA done though.

will be moving to penrite 10 tenths 10W40 as i can't get redline for less than twice that price now, it's crazy cheap (cheaper than mobil and edge, and much better), fully E85/OEM/whatever and full synth PAO as well. no brainer.

Motul 5w40 - it's proper, car is at 225km now and running strong. I don't know what that is in miles, something like 140? Either way. Motul.

I think you can use any BMW approved LL-01 oil and you will be good (for the N52/N54/N55 engines). Just need to make sure it is actually an approved oil, not "recommended for" or some other similar phrase (for example, Redline is not an approved LL-01 oil). Other than that, the biggest difference being a 0W versus a 5W, where a 0W should give better start-up protection.

Recently my car sees more city driving. So I want to switch oils.

Should I run do 0-30 or 0-40??
Why does someone need to run 0-40 oil in Ontario - US Midwest & Eastern states ?

Also should we be religious about LL-01? or Should we pay more attention to ACEA A3/B4 or some MB designation that are more common on oils( such as MB 229.5)?
I know we should avoid LL-04 because of sulphur.

andrey gta- I catch the sales at Canadian Tire for the 0/30 (something around $8/ltr. on sale). See no reason to use the 0/40 from Belgium. My understanding is the formulation is very similar but I feel the 30wt. is plenty.

I don't think it should make a big difference between more city vs highway driving for a 30 weight vs a 40 weight. The question to ask is, do you do more turning off and starting your car? If yes, then would definitely want to use a 0W, versus a 5W oil.

LL-01 approval is a very rigorous requirement (similar to MB 229.5 and Porsche A40), so just about any LL-01 also has the MB and ACEA A3/B4 approval.

In order to meet the LL-01 requirements for shear (HT/HS 3.5 or greater), any LL-01 approved 30 weight is a relatively "thick" 30 oil, but a 30 weight will most likely give you slightly better gas mileage than running a 40. Though I doubt you could really tell the difference between the two, with all things being equal.

I see no reason to deviate from LL01. BMW has done all the legwork for us, and with the cheapness and availibility of products like Mobil 1, it's a no brainer.

Side question... how long are you guys running between oil change intervals? I figure every 7k is a good interval but that's just a wild guess. BMW specs a what, 15k OCI which I think is absurd.

BMW changed the mileage to 10K: The dealer changed the oil in my car at that mileage even though I had changed it at 7.5K.

I run 7500 just to make it easy to continue to use the OCI indicator on the cluster.
