Winter Hand Wash Recommendations?
I'm thinking about what to do this winter: I dread getting my car washed at the dealer, and I'm not going to be doing it myself in January cold.
Curious if anyone has had any experieneces with D&D Hand Car Wash in Villa Park? Any others that do a good job without scratching/swirling?

I would possibly go there and ask how/what they use to wash the car. If you are experienced in hand washing your own vehicle you will know what to look for. Hopefully they arent too bad since you have Jet black.

Yeah, I feel like I'm behind the 8-ball with this thing. I'll go and talk to them...

I have found the biggest thing with places like this is the fact they dont change out soap often enough. I used to work at a detail shop, then managed it after a while. First thing I changed was the use of the same soap on cars over and over again. They also do not use the 2 bucket method. Also throwing the mits on the ground and simply hosing them off. SCEW THAT. I swear the guys who washed the cars put more scratches in them, then I would have to buff it out. Like I said I go to a touchless place by my condo here in Lisle. They have NEVER left a single scratch on the car. Always grab new towels to dry each car that comes by. They also leave them slightly damp (very slightly) so its not so abrasive. Love the place!

Touchless? Are you serious?
I have never used a touchless that worked. Every single time I have tried a touchless I got out and looked over my car only to find dirt still everywhere. Below the beltline, all over the rear bumper, mirrors, etc. I have been disappointed in so many car washes that I only do it at home. It is the only way I know I will be satisfied. |

Yeup I kid you not. No dirt or anything.. I know people get all anal about "ohhh the pressure washer will etch dirt into it" etc etc..I can assure you there isnt a scratch/marring on my paint from them. Just took the car in to BMW today and the SA even said.."man you keep your car clean". I am VERY anal with my car and I have had no issues with them. It could be because they pressure wash by hand first with the lower body and rims that it comes out cleaner. Also I wax the shit out of my car so dirt doesnt stick as easily. Mine is the SGM

I am going to try Simon's Shine Shop during winter time.
They claim that they use fresh mitt and microfiber tower for each car. In addition they use pH-balance soap so it won't strip away my layers of Zaino. Anyone has any experience with them? |

Simons is really good. I bought the 3 month unlimited wash package dec-feb. I have been using Simons for when i am lazy during the summer times also. Always a great job and they dont use hard chemicals or nasty wash mitts. Try River North on Superior, they are also excellent.

I'm about ten minutes from Lisle. (Actually, I used to live in Lisle!) What touchless wash do you go to over there?

Its almost on the corner of Maple and 53. About 1/2 a block south of Maple on 53. It is on the west side of the street. Its called touchless 53 or something like that.

I'm over in the west burbs as well! Maybe I'll give the Touchless 53 a try.
But does anyone know of any good hand car wash places in the west suburbs?

I went Simon's Shine Shop a few times and I am pretty happy with them. I bought 10 wash in advance and it works out to be around $12 per wash. It is the most basic wash they offer. I just want to get the salt off and I will do the detailing myself when it gets warmer.
P.S. On Jan 29th I saw a Black 135i with winter tires there at around 6. Does that belong to anyone on this forum? Last edited by Akien; 02-01-2010 at 04:46 PM.. |

That must be me. I saw your AW that night right off the freeway. I had to make a left cuz I was stuck in that lane. And then I saw your car again at Simon's as well.
FWIW, I also bought the 10 wash ticket system. It's actually very affordable to get it washed there, especially in the winter.

Try ONR (Optimum Brand NO RINSE) for the the winter... yeah you have to do it yourself but it works well and without a big h2o deal. You can use a spray bottle of warm water so you can do it IN your garage without a mess. Plus then you don't have to pay for some dbag to scratch your car and you know it'll be clean.
