ECU reset after each modification?
So my first mod was a flash tune... awesome power and response increase over stock.
Then it was a larger intercooler... even more power and torque. This weekend it was time to install my new muffler delete exhaust, it was custom made by Diffilipo Performance Exhausts in Melbourne. Its pretty much a 3" straight pipe from the resonator (axle) back. The sound and look is awesome, very happy. However I am concerned that the ECU is having an issue with self tuning to the exhaust, as driving around this weekend there were times it felt absolutely awesome, and at times (even 5- minutes later) it felt completely flat and unwilling to rev.... Has anyone experienced this before? I was thinking about reseting the ECU as I have never done this before, and to give it a chance to properly re-learn, however I don't know how to do this, any advice anyone? |

Yes.
Simply put the key in the dash, and turn the ignition all the way on without starting the engine. With the ignition on, push your accelerator pedal to the floor and hold for 30 seconds. Away you go |

The ECU adaptations are reset via a computer at your dealer or independent BMW specialist. The car will have to re-learn after the base settings have been cleared and that will take some time. Just driving the car will adjust for the changes you made to the car traditionally and from what i have seen. As i said previously, recheck your work or check for fault codes to see if you have developed an issue. Your Tune may need to be adjusted to your specs now but not because of the rear muffler, mainly due to the boost loss from the intercooler design or installation. Have a close look over the installation you did on the intercooler and also make sure the vac hose off the rear muffler valve has indeed been blocked off when they did the replacement. Stick your head under the car and see if anything is not connected under neath the car when the exhaust work was done. If the car is inconsistant in it's behaviour look for things like fuel quality, (ie, did you just fill up somewhere else?) Closely notice if you are starting to have long cranks as your pump may be on the way out and your fuel pressure may be inconsistant. If the car is unwilling to rev then i'd be suspicious of the pump or maybe a loose charge pipe to the throttle, but this would definately give you codes and a check light.
Anyway, just my 2c |

Thanks for the advice Andrew. I had the car on my mates hoist the other day (following our convo), and we checked over our work. Everything seemed tight, and nothing seemed out of place, even to the vacuum pipe for the factory exhaust.. all blocked up!
I have since tried the throttle reset and re-filled the car with fresh fuel and it instantly seemed better. I ran the car pretty hard around town for about an hour looking for it to fault again, and it seemd to be getting better the more I drove it. I am really interested to find out if indeed it was a bad fuel batch, or the throttle reset actually works... the main reason I am questioning this is because when I did the 30 second throttle reset (as mentioned above), all my seat, mirror, blinker and auto door lock settings were changed back to default. PS: Havent noticed any long cranks yet... |
