Smile Just made it to 15,000 mi....

I just got to 15,000 miles on my 135i, and there is no light to inform me to bring in for service. I had the oil changed at 2,000 miles and told them not to reset the mileage for the service..Should something be coming on to let me know the oil needs to be changed? Or should I just call the dealership and see what they know? Anybody else experience this? All replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to one and all ahead of time....

When you turn the car on, it should flash a mileage, that is the count down to service.

Mine went 18k on the first one, then required a 30k mile service where they didn't really do anything, and now needs another oil change at 35k. If you're doing a lot of highway driving it pushes it out it would seem.

if an owner does an oil chg.,on his own, at say 7500mi. as some , rightly or wrongly advocate, and that resets the service indicator, then when would one expect to get their free service from bmw?; in other words, if they'll only do it when the monitor calls for it one will be waiting for around 15k more miles forcing the owner to do it again to stay on an every 7500k schedule.

The computer does adapt/learn your driving style, and that's used to calculate the service intervals.
So for some it could show at 14k, others at 18k. You can check the OBD to see when the next service is due. Also, it's supposed to be 15k or 12 months, so if you bought the car over a year ago, take it in for an oil change.

Just performing an oil change doesn't reset the indicator. The service indicator is something that the dealership resets separately. What I'm saying is performing your own oil change at 7.5k shouldn't change the indicator from appearing around 15k.

Upon completing either an "interim" or time based oil change the dealer normally will not reset the mileage countdown. If, for some reason, you have had the counter reset, then you have delayed your next scheduled free change.

There is nothing wrong with an (approximate) 7,500 mile oil change schedule - just make certain whoever does the non-scheduled changes does not reset the dash countdown so that you can have the next change for free at around 15,000.

In my case, I paid for a change at 3,500 miles, had a free change at 14,000 since it was one year from delivery and just had another free change at 19,000 which was called for by the dash countdown.

Sounds like the 30k is the old "Inspection I" which coincided with an oil service. Seems sort of silly to separate it out and then come back a few thousand miles later - but that will be the case with mine as well. After a 19k oil change (lots of highway driving), my computer showed 11,000 miles to service (the 30k), and 22,000 to the next oil change. My SA indicated that the oil countdown isn't linear, that is it speeds up as you approach the zero mark, so I'll probably be due for the next free change around 37,000.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. At the 15,000mi. I'm showing, if I called the dealership and told them I'm at 15k and want the oil changed free, will they do it, or does the service light have to come on first? I'm not going to change it now and pay rather than wait another three thousand for it to be free. I hope I'm being clear about this, as I'm falling asleep writing this before bed. As with my first post of the thread, thanks ahead again. I love the 1addicts community. Best web site out there!!!!!!!!!!!

you should have your oil changed (espeically in a high performance car) no later than every 10k miles.

i went in yesterday to the dealer here in Heidelberg and he took my key and put it in a little reader at his computer. He then told me I wasn't even close to needing an oil change at 10500 miles. I drive the snot out of my car, but don't beat on it. I commute from Heidelberg to Coleman barracks where I work every day and it's about 50miles a day on average. Autobahn speeds and I mentioned that and he said there is no issues. Something about the BMW filtration system and the micro filter system they use to reduce the amount of oil required. It's not really that surprising either if you think about it. Technology ever expanding and all, why not make a car that has a better filtration system to reduce the amount of oil needed for the life of the car. Good experience all together I would have to say. My old opinion on when a car needs an oil change is based off old knowledge. At least thats what i'm being told

Your 15,000 miles speedo reading is irrelevant - what does the dash countdown say when you turn on the ignition? When it gets down to below 1,000 miles, then call your dealer & schedule your service.
After this service, you may decide to go for interim changes on your own dime, but it's not necessary to keep your warranty intact.

All depends on what your plans are for the car.
If you're leasing or plan to flip it before or shortly after the warranty runs out; then sure do the dealer suggested service every 15k miles. If you plan to keep you car any longer; $100 for an extra oil change at the 7.5k interval is cheap insurance to keep your car running well.
