N55 midpipe
just purchase the n55 midpipes. does anyone know how much additional horsepower the n55 midpipes provide compared to oem? also does anyone know if the maddads or berk provides more horsepower than the n55 midpipes or is the horsepower range the same?

It's hard to tell as I installed a Forge intercooler at the same time. But running just a remap I saw 402bhp and by just fitting the Forge and N55 mids, it jumped to 425bhp. Like I say, it's difficult to say how much of this increase was down to the Forge, but the N55 mids certainly added to it I'm sure.

We conducted back to back dyno tests at a high performance Indy shop, on two 1M's under the same conditions on the same day, after swapping over the OEM mids to the N55's. Deffinately a improvement on power output. One increased by 9kw's and mine increased by 12kw's. |

Do you happen to know what rpm's were the gains at? Were there any torque gains? Sorry for 20 questions but HP is a fairly worthless measurement without context. Ala the 200 HP Honda Civic... |

Someone posted a dyno on here (may have been zuzu) and I am pretty sure it was all top end, above 5K rpms. You won't feel that in daily driving, but it will make a difference at the track or when looking for maximum acceleration. Considering the amount of torque dropoff above 5k RPM's, any bit of help up there is a good thing. Makes it more like a true M-car.

Harold has a link to the before and after dyno for the MadDad here:
http://www.hpashop.com/MadDad-EuroSp...midpipe-1m.htm n55 should be similar, maybe a little less. They have smaler diameter pipe, but the secondary cat delete is where most of the difference is made. The MadDad's seem to help from about 3k rpm's and up. It would be nice to see some independent examples verifying this. |

^^Thanks for posting that link. This kind of confirms my butt dyno in that the N55 mids while increasing mid and top end power you do loose some low end grunt in the 2K to 3K range. That was one reason why when I installed my PE I went back to N54 mids with the secondary cats.

There is nothing at all lost (hp or tq) in my 1M (butt and Mustang dynoes confirming) after swapping to N55 mids, low end included. Up to 2500 rpm it is essentially the same and starts giving a kick slowly afterwards, delta increases especially after 4000 rpm till the end. I've posted related dyno charts in the past about my exhaust install experience on a Evolve thread.
Granted 1M has a different tune than 135i and other N54 applications and just to be precise, I've swapped the N55 mids at the same time with the Race muffler, if that matters anything I sincerely doubt though. EDIT: I've found the dyno charts and my thread too and like Dackel said before there actually seems to be some loss but not till 3000 rpm, in 1M it is before: from idle to 2400-2500 rpm where the N55 mids catch and start kicking over the OE mids very neatly. It looks like hp/tq starts at a slightly lower level from idle and then stays noticeably more than OE after 2500 to redline. Sounds like what this car exactly needs to me Even that slight loss at the very low down can be interpreted as something positive since there is too much torque making the launch difficult in most cases. The curve seems much sweeter to me "after" the exhaust mod (I was and still am with stock engine tune and cattted dps, sole difference is the N55 mids and Evolve Race, same dyno, conditions as apples to apples). Here, check the post #16 with the attached before/after dyno chart in pdf: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=745649
