135i e-brake system

So I took my rear rotors off to paint because of the ugly rust. I'm use to a rachet type e-brake found on many jap cars. So when I removed the rear caliper and found only the hydro line and nothin else I was confused/releaved made it an easier job. upon removing the rotor from the hub, it looks like it has an internal drum brake system. Only thing is it looks like it is missing pads.

Can someone explain to me what I am seeing, why is it metal to metal contact? Is this part of the traction/safety system(e-dif)? Any input on this would be appreciated.

P.s. painting the rotors came out amazing looks so fresh

Doesn't BMW use a drum brake for the emergency/parking brake? Drum brakes have shoes with linings instead of pads.

Usually but it could also be a device where somehow the piston is actually actuated. My saab is like this. The rear calipers actually operate as a parking brake too.

awesome thanks man just needed someone to confirm it. You would think they would have figured out a rachet system/ reuse the calipers braking system, probaly save a bit of weight in the rear. But glad to know after time I would need to replace the shoes. They are very thin looks like metal to metal

Unless you frequently use the e-brake while the car is moving, the shoes will pretty much last forever, so they don't have to be very thick. I believe BMW has been using this system for a long time; my 2002 330i had the same arrangement.

Just remember to park in gear with a MT as the E brake isn't super powerful as a "parking brake".

I also find it's easy to move a few yards with it still applied - but the warning gong helps for us forgetful types.

I believe they went with this set up because of the regenerative brakeing system.

the rotor. Not the actual part where it clamps but the part that goes over the hub and then is between the rim and the rotor if that makes sense.

Mine were looking a bit rusty. Now it looks perfect. Apprently some 08s had this problem. Mine is an 09 but with an 08 build date
