330i Acceleration
Where is the power distributed on in the 330i?
If I want to go fasted 0-60 do I keep the revs in the 3-4000 rpm range thru the gears or do I keep it 5-6000 rpm or where?

well, from the specs, you should be getting max torque at 2750 rpm.

6000-6500 rpm seems to be the sweet spot.

Torque gets you off the line, HP gets you to the end. Peak torque is at 2750 but the band is good throughout the full range. Peak HP is at around 6000 so you should be shifting by about 6500 to keep from bloging down. Shifting there should throw it back to the 4K range as you're running through the gears. All the other shifts at 6000 - 6500 RPM were quite fun |

assuming you have a manual transmission, I believe maximizing 0-60 acceleration largely involves perfecting your launch technique. This definitely requires some skill and practice. For example, if you launch with too little RPM you will have a higher time. But if you launch at too high an RPM, you may have too much wheelspin. I believe that the fastest times usually involve some wheelspin. The objective is to experiment and find just the right amount that maximizes initial acceleration. After that, I would suppose full throttle acceleration through the gears, shifting as rapidly as you can do so smoothly and with finesse (lift throttle with the clutch fully disengaged). I would try to hit as close to redline as possible.
Obviously, do it in a safe place and warm up the engine first. Alternatively, you can try to maximize your 5-60mph time (from a rolling start). This is still fun and reduces clutch wear and shock to the drivetrain from the rapid starts described above.

obviously, would want to turn DSC off for the 0-60 times, to allow wheelspin. Might want to turn it back on after getting going, however, to increase stability in case evasive maneuvers must be made or during rapid deceleration from high speeds

Maximum overall acceleration is achieved when you keep the engine as close to the point of peak power as possible. And the optimum shift points for the car is when the thrust in the next available gear exceeds the thrust available in the current gear, based on the torque curve of the engine and the specific gearing.
Has anybody dynoed a 330i 6MT on a Dynojet 248C? I'd love to see a plot of one. I could easily calculate the shifts points if somebody has one. Somebody posted one for a 325i 6MT over here, and given the power ratings it was pretty impressive. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7801 I'm pretty sure a dyno would show the optimal shift points to be all the way up at redline, unless there's some huge drop-off in torque before you get to redline that is.

Already said I nknow
EU spec says the 330i has 258BHP @ 6600rpm. There(6600) you should shift. ALSO in first gear. And YEP turn the DSC/DTC thing off if you want to go more smoothly(and a bit of wheelspin) At track/ringdays I'm always shifting at redline(7000)Poor engine.LOL |
