Do I need a tow hook or tow strap for my car?

I was reading another article on bimmerpost, and someone mentioned about where the their tool kit in the trunk. I haven't had to have my 135 towed yet, but I want to make sure I have the right equipment if needed. Nothing was included in my car (I am the 2nd owner).

Some, not all of the toolkit components are listed within this diagram. The thing you want is the tow hinge, part number 72157070643.

Much appreciated! So no tow strap needed? The hinge looks like it should run $27 or so.

I personally don't carry a tow strap in my 135i, but various other users on this forum do. I do carry one in another one of my vehicles, however.

Safety equipment and other stuff in the trunk is really up to you. We have no guidelines or laws like Europe. I've stocked each of my vehicles accordingly; BMW M Mobility Kit, extra oil, first aid kit, etc.

Do be aware that most tow straps won't fit in the "tow hinge" and if they do you're going to have a hell of a time getting it untied.
I went and bought a 10,000# clevis that I carry with me. That way I can just slip it through the tow strap next time. Save me 2 hours of picking the damn strap out of the eyelet, that sucked.

I have a tow rope with closing eye hooks that I keep in my trunk. I got it at Home Depot years ago for about $40 and I've used it a number of times, never for myself though always to get someone else out of a ditch or snow bank lol. However it's nice to have if I ever do take a spill and just need help to get rubber on the road again.
