At only 22k I had an issue with the vanos valves while driving on the freeway to Vegas
Car cut power and CEL came on while I was cruising with the flow of traffic
I had to drop the car off at Desert BMW of Las Vegas and they replaced the vanos valves now everything is fine

Maybe your vanos is acting up?

Sometimes I hear my valves ticking shortly after start up, but then it goes away.

FYI Gas cannot mix with water, water will settle at the bottom of the tanks being that water is hevier and most gas stations suck from the side of the tank.

Garage List
2008 128i Coupe  [0.00]
Gasoline with ethanol can entrain up to 1% water. Normal Gasoline can entrain .1%.

While that's not a huge number, with crappy E10 gas (most gas these days, thanks corn subsidies!) that's almost 1 1/2 cups of water in a 10 Gallon Fillup.

If you buy good gas you are still looking at 1/8 of a cup per 10 gallon fillup.

Now most of that stays in solution, but it will preciptiate out with temperature fluctuations. After a few fillups with wet gas you could have enough water on the bottom of your tank to get pickup from the pump.
