Jacking Points

My snow tires and steel whels are coming today from Tire Rack.

Since there is no jack with this car are there still obvious points under the car where you can safely put a floor jack?

When changing tires, I just put the floor jack under the rear jack pad and change both front and rear tires at the same time.

My jack has a round flat rubber base so no damage occurs to the jack pads, otherwise I would use jack pad adapters (see http://burgertuning.com/BMW_jack_pad_adapter.html or http://www.reverselogic.us/bmw_jack_pad.html for example).

You need to use a jack pad under the jacking points. Without the pad, you'll crush the the plastic boxes designed to hold them. This company makes the best pad for the BMW:

Also look and see if they have any specials.

Of course that pad fits everything but the E88 convertible...

The $35 pad doesn't fit but the $25 pad does (of that sites pads). You don't need that device, however. I just cut blocks of 3/4 plywood to fit. Others have used short pieces of 1 inch square tubing. Others have used pieces of hockey puck cut to fit.

I jack the car up using the center jacking points in the front and back and use block of wood to fill the plastic places on the sides where I put jack stands.

Yesterday I put the snows on. I just used my normal floor jack and the four points behind each wheel. No problem, just needed to be careful not to break the plastic pieces.

Also I never had a car with lug bolts before, only lug nuts.

Just drive your car up on ramps to change the tires. ::giggle::

Just kidding, but you can jack it up using the obvious jack points that you see when you get down and look under the car. I've used the floor jack on the plastic pads both with and without my ingenius jackpad protector tool and it didn't ruin them. Good luck!

Burger Motorsports makes some nice jackpad adapters. I've used them a few times and my jackpots are still functional.

FWIW: I needed to get under my car (at the dealership) last week to inspect. The lift used at dealer lifts from each side on adjustable arms the tech slides into place (the arms reach out from the sides, not the center, very clever design). The ends of the arms are round with flat rubber pads. The tech slid the arms/pads into place beneath the four outer jack points. Nothing inserted into the jack point; the key, here, is a flat jack surface. The jack points on my car are a bit damaged, but I don't know that it really matters. My understanding is the rectangular insert of the jack point is to accommodate BMW emergency jacks on cars with spare tires.

My jack (Arcan aluminum 2-ton, *love* it) already has a flat rubber-padded jacking surface, all I need now is the right jack stands (flat, no V)... and I believe I'm going to buy four of these:

My Craftsman jack doesn't have a pad, so if anyone doesn't feel like paying for a pad, I just use a rubber ice hockey puck and that works perfectly fine.

I think you can get a hockey puck for like $1.50

+1 for hockey puck. That's what I use when I'm doing things with the plastic jack points. Alternatively, you could use the front center jack point for the two front wheels, then use the differential for the rear wheels. Or like one poster said, use the rear jack point to jack up one side completely, and you can do both front and rear on that side at the same time.

The first thing I looked at when you agreed with me was your country of origin. It made complete sense that everyone else buys pad adapters except us.

You can do what I did back when I got my e46. Take the jack stand upper portion, and trim the ears down on each end so they fit inside the jack pads at each corner. Use your floor jack at each end of the vehicle (subframe pad in front, diff body in back) to raise each end of the vehicle and put the stands in place. Due to the slightly concave profile along the top of the stands, I have still been able to use them across the pinch weld on other vehicles like VW even. Works great, and the positive engagement of the stand inside the BMW pads provides extra peace of mind when you're under the car.

Did you post some pics of this at one time? sounds familiar. I was thinking of doing the same thing with the floor jacks.

This. I used a pair of sears jack stands and an angle grinder to make them fit the BMW jack pads.

This. The jack pads are made out of butter and get chopped up really easily by the way.
