N55 BMS Intake
I've been back and forth about getting an Intake because of all the mixed talk and test results on whether or not it's a good idea. Finally I decided to do it mostly for the sound and also because of the intake air temp test results from some people's testing.
Anyways, I get the intake and immediately notice a squeak sound when letting off the throttle after light blips. Sounds like mouse or a chirping bird. After a while it seemed to go away so I didn't worry about it. We were getting ready to head out to Bimmerfest yesterday and the damn Service Engine Soon light came on. I went anyways and the car seemed ok but WTF? Now the squeak is back too. Anybody have this problem? I'm removing this immediately. **EDIT - This was just a strange coincidence by the looks of it. Put the old intake on and problem still remains. I don't want anybody getting a negative impression from this. **EDIT2 - The problem ended up being a service bulletin on a rear main seal that was bad. Completely unrelated to the intake. I have a n55 and BMS intake and have gone 1k miles without a problem. When letting off the throttle I do get a sound that I could imagine someone would call a bird chip like sound. I believe it to be the blow off from the boost

Several hundred intakes in use without issue. So either something is loose or the SES is unrelated. If you have a JB4 just read the code to see what it is. More noises are normal with the intake.

i have the same exact issue but its not the intakes. i will post a video in a few but someone said that it could be a diverter valve.

I'm not sure if your talking about the noise from the blow off a pronounced swooshing sound or not, but I had the check engine light come on after install once. This could have been because I was driving spiritedly and it was over 100 degrees. Went into limp mode til I turned off car and sat for a minute. I checked sensor to make sure it didn't come just a smidge loose and all has been good since then. I have the same engine and intake as you.
Check connection for the sensor if it comes loose at all the check engine light will come on pretty quickly after. Did the car go into limp mode after light went on? |

It's definitely not the diverter valve making the squeaking sound. This sound reminds me of a slipping pulley, in fact that's what I thought it was at first, but sounds as though it's coming from the back of the engine. This started literally the first time I started the car after the intake was put on. I was very careful during the install and it's dead simple so I highly doubt I did anything. I put the old intake back on and I'll be going for a drive tonight to check it out so i'll report back later.
I'm pretty sure my service was done as scheduled but is there any way I can check it on the car? Sorry I haven't replied back sooner. I've been busy since getting back from Maryland. I'll let you all know how it goes. |

I think you all might be right. First drive today with the old intake back on and the squeak sound is still there as is the engine light. Looks like a horrible coincidence. I'll be curious to see what this sound is coming from.

I have been using this intake for about 2k miles now and have yet to have a single issue with anything BMS makes.

My car goes in for service next Friday. I'll let you know if they find out what's making this noise. They'll probably say they couldn't reproduce the problem.

Apparently not
According to bms you don't need to disconnect battery, but only let the car sit ten minutes without the keys in it. For most cars you would be right though or at least all of the other cars I've added intakes too. I'm assuming if they wanted you to do it though the instructions would have said so specifically.

Update - After about a week of running with the stock intake, maybe 3 hours of driving, my Check engine light has gone off. I'm still going to be taking it in for service next Friday. I may also try to put the BMS intake back on and unhook the battery for a while to see if the light comes back on.

I'm running the BMS intake and my Service Engine Light just came on this morning. The car drives and runs fine. I've had my intake on for about 2,000 miles I believe now. I'm going to bring it in for service this Friday but remove the intake before dropping off the car. I'm sure it's just normal maintance. I was going leave the JB4 on the car though and switch to Map 0. I'll probably swap out the intake to the stock one tomorrow night and see what that does.
