Squeaky Brakes When Reversing

Hey guys,

I am noticing that my brakes squeak awfully loud when reversing for the first time I drive the car that given day. I asked the dealer awhile back and they said that this was normal, but this is way too loud a sound to be normal.

Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Thanks!

That would drive me n-u-t-s NUTS.... My OEM pads squealed off and on for 50+% of their 65k mile life. Switched to Cool Carbons 5k miles ago and nary a peep since.
You could try spraying down the entire brake assembly(s) (wheels on) with brake cleaner ($4 can) followed by a re-bed attempt of the pads via repetitive high speed panic type stops. It will likely go away.... but almost as likely, it will return at some future point in time...

I'd say keep reversing into the BMW service department until they fix it for you.

I have this too! Also, when I park and yank the e-brake, when I get out of the car sometimes there's a little noise out of the rear brakes as well. Not exactly a squeal, but an odd noise. Do you get that as well?

My thoughts: 1) Something's frozen - it's not gripping like it should when parked, and it's not letting loose like it should when reversing later. 2) "Normal" = bullshit. Hearing the engine simply run when the car has been started is normal, hearing your brakes squeal like this is not normal.

It might not be a big issue or one worth dealing with, there's a lot of truths about not worrying about it, but it's definitely not "normal" and I wouldn't be hesitant to laugh at the dealer and call them out on that. I haven't had the opportunity yet since it started after my last free service and I don't care enough to make a special trip for it.

Thanks for the replies...I'll try the brake cleaner first, if that doesn't work then I am definitely taking it to the dealer and having them fix it.

If it's like my Eclipse it's a drum inside of a disc, and it's the drum brake that's making the noise. Meaning brake cleaner won't help, it's gotta be taken apart.

Exactly this. My car is an MT, so I park it with the handbrake up, and then when it comes time to set off again, I get a squeal that is identical to the one in the video. My guess is that the parking brake is sticking just a tiny bit, and only really loosens off completely once you move more than 5mph or tap the brakes. Slightly irksome, but short of fiddling with the e-brake adjustment, let it be, I don't think it's really hurting anything, just a minor annoyance.

^^+1. That squeal is not normal. You need to play that video for them and tell them you park with your hand brake on. G.L.

Mine does the same thing. I park with the e-brake on.
