Why Diff size

Why, what purpose, are the front and rear tires different sizes? Is there any benefit for this? would running same size tires do anything for or against the ride? I am just learning about tires so any comments appreciated.

I'm no tire expert, but being RWD having a larger size in the back would be beneficial for traction.

Also increases understeer, which, from BMW's point of view, is a welcome safety characteristic
