Lightbulb Need Help: N55 Charge Pipe

Hi guys. I just got my car about a month and a half ago and I'm curious about my charge pipe. Is it a must to change my factory charge pipe? I heard the factory charge pipe is made from plastic and it's just the matter of time until something bad happens. I don't mind to change it if I have to. I want to prevent that problem while I can replace it with the aftermarket one.

What is the best charge pipe for N55? and why? I'm thinking to change it anyway with a hope it will boost a little performance and make better throttle response. I know there are some charge pipe out there but have no idea which is better than the others.

Really need your help guys. Appreciate any comments and opinions. Let me know the reason why you choose that charge pipe. Thank you guys!

The CP was the first mod I did for my car. There is technically not a "best" charge pipe. Evolution Racewerkes, STETT, and ETS are good charge pipes that a lot of members here have been running. All with no complaints that I know of. What's good about your N55 is all the parts are so much cheaper than the N54s. I paid about $520 for my CP and BOV, but your charge pipe is like $200 . But it sucks you can't have a BOV...below are links to all 3 charge pipes I mentioned above, you just need to make the decision after reading on the details of each and see which one you like more

I have the evolution racewerkes one on my n54 and have 0 complaints about it. Except for the fact they didn't send me a coupler that connects to the intercooler piping - I had to use the stock ribbed one.

So basically they're almost the same? I heard about procede CP, do you know about that? I'm quite interested with procede but again I have no idea about the difference between one to others. Thanks

The people who claim "it's only a matter of time" tend to be those that are running boost pressures higher than stock. It's not really as bad as people make it out to be, but it is by far the weakest link in the intercooler plumbing system. That being said, I replaced mine when I started running a tune for peace of mind.

All of the aftermarket charge pipes are built from similar materials (usually aluminum) and have the same overall shape and diameter, so in all honesty you can't go wrong. I went with the Evolution Racewerks charge pipe because it's the only one that properly mounts onto the stock bracket. Other charge pipes just sort of float there. I also liked the black look, as I think chrome "bling" is tacky.

If running meth is something that may be in your future, make sure you get one with a meth bung (sometimes this is an option).

We have 20% off our N55 charge pipes right now. They include 2 bungs as well.

Pretty much all the same in most aspects. But like the person below mentioned, I think the ER CP is the only one that mounts to the stock bracket on the TB . Someone else might chime into that

I don't know about the procede one, I'm sure it's just as good as the others..

Thanks Angerman! By the way, is anyone ever use procede CP? Let me know your experience with it. Thanks!

Why twice? Is there something wrong?

Will the dealership frown on this upgrade? Would it void your warranty?

I recently installed an ER chargepipe on my N55. I can't really comment on throttle response as I installed JB4 at the same time. CP fits perfectly, uses the factory mount and has a meth bung(two actually) as I intend to add meth next spring. I would pull it out before a dealer visit myself, can be switched over to stock in under ten minutes once you have done it once. Looks nice in black as well!

So the consensus is that everyone likes the ER charge pipe for the N55?

Its going to be one of the first things changed on my 2012.. followed by an exhaust and hopefully a tune whenever Cobb decides to release something for it

I've already run 10k hard miles including methanol injection in those miles on my ETS N55 CP. Everything is perfect. You just need to make sure to install / tighten it properly. No reason to pay for more expensive CP's when ETS does its job perfectly well.

I have a N54 and I'm learning about the engine.

What is the purpose of a charge pipe?
How about the diverter valves?
How is the Forge diverter valve better than OEM?
Looks like you can go with a blow off valve instead of a diverter valve, whats the benefit?

Mysticblue, you asked enough questions there to start a whole new thread =) I won't answer too much because it is offtopic, but most of your questions are general questions regarding turbos in general, and you should do a fair bit of reading if you want to get to know your engine better.

http://www.autozine.org/technical_sc...duction_3.html

That link has a schematic of the N54 with regards to the turbo, and 15 is the chargepipe, and 9/13 are the diverter valves, 7/14 are the pipes that carry air from the diverter valves to the beginning of the cycle and 10 is the intake.

In short, the chargepipe is the pipe with pressurized air after it is compressed by the turbo and cooled by the intercooler.

The diverter valves are connected to the chargepipe and to the intake, and are used to divert compressed air when you let off your gas or change gears, as this creates a sudden drop in air pressure and without the diverter valves could mean that the pressurized air would rush the other way (back to the turbos) and potentially even cause damage. Instead, the air is thrown back into the intake and makes it way around the whole system again.

The Forge diverter valves have changeable springs, which means you can adjust the pressure at which air would be recirculated. The stock ones are set at a given level and at some point could create problems holding boost if you are going well over stock boost levels.

Blow-off valve vs. diverter valve is a long topic without clear-cut answers in my opinion. With bigger turbos diverter valves are good because pressurized air is entering the intake instead of normal air, which means after changing gear/letting off the gas you start at a higher boost level rather than getting fresh air and starting from 0. Our N54s most certainly are not big turbos though. On the other hand, the air in the chargepipe is hotter than what the intake is taking, so if you have diverter valves you are recirculating hotter air, which is detrimental to performance. Then there is also the matter of preference regarding sound - blow-off valves give that famous ppssshhh sound whereas diverter valves are much quieter. Basically you're good with either on our platform, it is not a big deal.

Depends. There are people on here FBO and their SA loves their car and doesn't give them any shit. Then you have the others that have gotten shit like myself. I only had the charge pipe installed when I went to my dealer for the last warranty oil change and told them to just check around the engine and make sure everything is normal. The guy comes back and said, "That aluminum pipe you have in your engine bay..." Yes? "Well if anything was wrong with the car, which there isn't, that voids the warranty." Nothing was wrong with the car, so I didn't feel like getting into it with the guy and before I left I took 3 of their free beverages they had sitting in a fridge; figured I'd get something out of the day at least lol
