BMW Performance Center Delivery
Anyone planning to purchase a new BMW (any model) should seriously consider the no-cost option to receive the car at the BMW Performance Center in Greenville SC. I accompanied my brother this week as he took delivery on his new X5 diesel and it was an incredible experience.
You have to get yourself to Greenville but then BMW puts you up in a hotel near the plant and covers dinner the night of your arrival and breakfast the next morning. Hotel bill is also paid for. Upon arrival at the Performance Center, you attend a short class and then it's out to the track with professional instructors. Everyone gets into an identical car to the one that they're picking up and you run through a variety of instructional drills from braking to skidpad. There is also an offroad session that was unbelievably fun. The morning was capped off with some hot laps in an M5 with one of the drivers. Lunch was in the employee cafeteria and then you get your car. A customer relations person goes over the car in as much detail as you need. Afterwards, there was a tour of the manufacturing plant. This alone was worth the trip as the plant is one of the most advanced automobile manufacturing facilities in the world. It was a fascinating tour. I just got my new to me 135i but have had 4 other BMWs before this one. My next car in a couple of years will be a 1M and I will take delivery in Greenville like he did. Totally worth the trip. |

Agreed.
And anyone who thinks that they might enjoy the Performance Center delivery should just put down the money and schedule an ///M School, regardless of whether they're picking up a new car or not. |

I wish I could have done that, but the timing was bad. Apparently the PCD would have taken another month plus from when I got my car, and I couldn't chance driving it back to CT in snow or ice. I wonder if they give "rain checks"???

Sounds like a ball!
But I hate to break it to you but the 1M is for one year only so they won't make anymore! Hurry and get one now or you'll have to go used. You might be able to do an M2 Perf. Ctr. Delivery.... |

Yep, they do. Drove one at an M school and took a hot lap in one. They also have them for folks to drive who are taking 1M delivery there.

Sure they have 1Ms you can drive. My point was that in a year you won't be able to buy a new one, much less do PCD on one. They are for one model year only. You can go enjoy the Perf Ctr car all you want... It's still not your own! Which stinks.

I took PCD on my 128i vert in 2009 and thorughly enjoyed it. I did a 2 day M school last year and really enjoyed that too. I've also driven the performance center track three times now in an autocross sponsored by the local BMWCCA chapter. Great fun. At the last autocross, they used a 1M and a M3 for hot laps. I had a hot lap in a M3 and drove it on the same track so I passed on that but I loved a lap in the 1M. Much more brutal/agressive than the M3. And the M3 is more agressive feeling than the M5 or M6. I'm thinking of doing a 1 day M school to drive the 1M on the track. It is the only manual M car at the Performance Center. I need to work on my shifting under quasi race conditions. I am worried that they won't keep the 1Ms around past the spring of 2012.

My experience was similar. Being in GA, it's almost a mandatory delivery if you consider yourself even slightly car enthusiast. I took my son, who considers a car merely something to get him from A to B and who has never washed the car I gave him throughout the entire high school years, had a blast. I only wish that they had more driving drills. The braking and skidpad was more to showcase what a BMW can do rather than drill your skills. They could also include a slalom and a mini auto-cross track. The high speed hot laps were a lot of fun. Window of opportunity has already been closed for several months now. If you took delivery at your dealer, you can sign up for one of their many Driving Schools, but it won't be free. |

+1 on the enjoyment factor for the PCD.
I used FF miles to fly to Greenville so the only cost was gas for the drive home - and even that was not bad - they delivered my 135 with a full tank of gas instead of the usual fraction of a tank I have gotten from dealers.... |
