i currently have 8800 miles on my car and have not done a oil change.i topped it off w 2quarts of oil from the dealer at 5000 miles.what worries me is that i have always gotten a oil change every 4000 to 5000 miles with my previous cars.should i really listen to the dealers and wait till 15000 mi first oil change or should i get one asap??and if i do get a oil change does it void out the dealer service change at 15000mi??

I paid for an oil change out of pocket at 1300 miles. Doing so will not void out the dealer change at 15000 miles.

I got an oil change at about 7500miles. It doesn't void out your 15000mile oil change. I just did it for peace of mind.

got mine changed from the dealer at 5000km. its out of pocket to change the oil before the requested mileage; just make sure you get it changed from the dealer to avoid warranty issues..

If you're needing to put in 2 qts every 5k miles, you ARE doing intermediate oil changes. That's pretty excessive oil consumption. How long did you drive with the low oil light on, seeing it comes on when you are a half quart low.

Is it half a quart? I always thought that came on at 1 quart.

If it is indeed half a quart, I've overfilled mine by half once early on (the only time I've ever added oil to it) and it didn't indicate it.

Two quarts in 5k miles ceratinly sounds excessive. I'm betting this car is at least 1 quart over the mark.

Changing oil every 5K miles saves you money and headache down the road (unless you are planning to dispose of the car early). BMW 'recommends' 15K miles or 1yr, whatever comes first, so maybe you can have them do it on the premises of the latter?

Even on my RS4 where oil changes are steep (car uses 11 qtr of oil!), I pay out of pocket every-other oil change as the Audi Care plans calls for 10K miles (regardless of lapsed time), and I change it every 5 miles.

Your previous cars were probably not filled with synthetic oil like your 1er. And even though BMW has been using only synthetic oil for a number of years, some of us prefer to change once between the scheduled services at approx. 7,500 miles. If you decide to do that now, tell your dealer you want an "Interim" oil change and for them not to reset the dash countdown. That way, it shouldn't cost more than $100 and your next scheduled service will be covered. Incidentally, 15,000 miles is only an average - the actual mileage is dependant on your driving style and could be anywhere from about 12,000 to 18,000.

(Also you might ask them to check for any oil leaks as 2 quarts in 5,000 miles seems like a bit much.)

Tom

Very helpful thread. I think I'll be paying out of pocket for my first change at 7,500 miles.

If you plan to mod your car, you should learn to change your own oil. I just do my own every 3000 miles, because i push 18psi of boost daily.

most of my miles comes from city driving.lots of stop and go's.i'm more of a crusier so i never push my car.just regular driving.once the oil light came on i headed to the dealer right away witch was bout 30 miles from home.i too thought 1 qt would be needed but the services advisor said i needed the 2nd qt after cking the oil level.i just thought that it just burns lots of oil cause it's a tourbo engine.is my car burning more oil than others??

Changing your own oil does nothing to your warranty. You might be told otherwise by somebody but they do not know what they are talking about. As long as you don't leave the oil out or put the wrong kind in or something that causes damage, your warranty is still fully enforceable and it shouldn't take long to establish that if there is ever an issue. And there should be no big indication you even did it to raise the issue (other than the oil will possibly look better).

My 128i is one of the easiest cars to change oil on that I have owned. And dealer charges are the highest of any car I have owned. I recommend getting an oil change kit from Tischer or United and a cap wrench for the filter from Bavarian and doing it yourself. It will take less time than taking it to the dealer. Even if you have to also buy a 3/8 ratchet for the cap wrench and a 17mm wrench for the drain plug, you will save money on the very first oil change. Only other thing you need is a drain pan which are cheap. Advance Auto will take your used oil and recycle it (for nothing).

So if you change your own oil 'before the requested mileage', a dealer may void your warranty???

I still think adding 2qtrs as the OP stated is excessive. I have not seen any evidence of the N54 engine being oil thirsty, in fact I have never ever added a drop of oil on mine, and I do mostly city driving.

I agree. Mine used 1 quart on the first oil change interval, and hasn't used a drop since.

I had to add 1 qt after 3 months, then another qt 3 months later. The car is now 7 months old. Broken in nicely for first 1000 miles
