2012 128i first service
I've run several searches, and found nothing. My question is, does anybody know why BMW dropped the 1200 mile service on the 2012 128i, and doesn't show needing a service until 15kmiles?

There was NEVER a 1,200 mile service for a 128i nor a 135i. Only for the 1M's.
First service is an oil change at 15K miles. Some people like myself have changed thier oil several times before hitting 15K. I did mine at 1,200 miles, 2,400 miles and then at 5K intervals. |

Mike Miller indicates in his Old School Maintenance Guide that originally BMW recommended a 1,200 mile service for all their cars. But that predates the 1 series cars. I did mine a little late but did an oil change about 1,600 miles. Tischer will sell you a kit delieverd to your house for about $60. Seemed reasonable to me. It is simple to change. There is trap door for the drain plug and the oil filter is a paper cartridge with the compartment easily accessable on top of the engine. A special cap wrench is handy to have, however, for the oil filter housing. Bavarian has it for a good price.

I dropped mine yesterday for its first maintenance (15K) and the tech was surprised I did paid for the voluntary intermediate Oil change I had ordered at 7k. He told me BMW gives a free oil change during the first year of the car, even if it is before the first official service.

I was at around 9k miles on my 08 128i before it got its first oil change. I just never did that much driving the first year I had my car. The miles I did have on it was mostly back German roads and Autobahn though. Also I just had blackstone-labs test my oil @ 17,304 miles on the oil (0 quarts added). They said my oil was a little thick (from excess heat) and my aluminum and copper levels were elevated. Blackstone recommended oil changes around 12k miles instead of the 15k-18k that your car will tell you.

I do mid interval changes. Every 7k miles, which means 2.5 months of driving for me.
