Emergency Puncture repair

Having just gone to non-RFT's, I'm looking into alternatives if I get a puncture. I have a 12v compressor - so no probs there. Looking at what to put in the tyre to fix the leak, I came across conflicting information.

Tyre places all said don't use the fluids, as they semi-melt the inner casing of the tyre - that's how it fills the leak - which, while fixing the immediate problem, wrecks the tyre. they all recommended using a string kit as a temp repair until you can get a proper repair done, As the string kit doesn't wreck the tyre.

But accesssory places (AutoOne, Repco, SCA, etc) all say no issue, that's not how they work.

Clearly the cans of "goop" are much more convenient, but not if it costs you a new tyre if you use it.

Has anyone had any experience with this, and come to a definative conclusion?

Cheers All.

They only say that because most people fill it full of the fluid and keep driving on it. They need to cater to the lowest common denominator.

No problem with using it and having going and having the tyre fixed/replaced in the next 24 hours or so, it just winds up corrosive to the tyre/wheel if you leave it for a period of time.

Which one of those kits did you get, and can you order direct from their website?

The Slime kit is useful only for slow leaks and punctures.

I had a 'faster' leak from a nail (still imbedded) a month or two ago, hooked up my Slime compressor kit, and it just sprayed the Slime goo straight out of the tyre hole.

There was no chance for the slime to set and seal.
Chances are, if you can hear the hiss of a leak, it's beyond the capabilities of these kits

I think in the event of a nail, slow or fast leak, I'd first use the compressor only. Depends on where you are, use the compressor inflate enough to take you to a nearest tyre shop. A blow out would be a different story.

Stay off the dirty part of the road.

I went for the Dynaplug option as it seemed more innovative. I guess you can say they are, plug and play...

I already have the BMW Mobility Kit. Can I just replace the BMW sealant with the Slime sealant?

Get them all ... can of goo, string kit and compressor! They'll all fit in the compartment under the boot floor. None of them are foolproof and if one doesn't work, the other might get you home.

Don't trust the repair as a permanent fix, no matter how good it looks. You should always get the tyre removed from the rim and checked for other damage. Quite often, the hole from the nail or screw might be fixable, but running a short distance on a deflated tyre can badly damage the sidewall, which you won't see it from the outside.

Oh, and read the instructions on the can of goo! They usually contain flammable propellant which will hang around in your tyre after it's inflated. Don't be tempted to top it up with a compressor or you'll end up with an explosive mix of hydrocarbon and air.

I couldn't believe the difference in price. But yeah, pretty sure it's the same with all the plugs etc. How do you manage to secure such a big kit in your car zuzu? I ended going with the one model down.

There are a couple of anchor points in behind the back seats..just tie down..tight.

The BMW mobility kit, supplied with the 1M fits perfectly into its own compartment alongside the battery.

I got a bike a while back, so I needed a repair kit that fits under the seat. Haven't had to use it, but quite compact and seems simple enough to use. Even comes with a few thingys full of CO2.

About 40 bucks at MCAS Auburn from recollection.

Ditto. I keep the same bike kit under the back seat of the bike when on a long trip. Otherwise it's next to the battery in the boot of the car. Never had to use it...
