Misfiring, Rough Idle, Engine wont start. HELP!
2009 BMW 128i 48k Miles N52
Girlfriend buys the car back in august of 2015. The other day i do an oil change and changed the front brake pads. 1. I noticed that the car had no oil filter in it i assume the car was running at least 3k miles or more without this filter. I replaced the oil filter and oil with Mobile 1 5W-30 and a Mann Oil filter. 2. The same night the Service Engine Soon light comes on followed by a rough idle and misfiring. I drove the car home and parked it everything was fine. 3. The next morning i started the car, same symptoms. Rough idle and misfiring car was very jerky and loss of power when accelerating. Car shuts off completely. 4. Car would sometimes start up and sometimes it would just crank for a long time and not start up. If it does start up it will stay on for about 5-10 seconds before it shuts off again. 5. Ran some codes and got P0015 Exhaust B Camshaft Position timing Over-retarded P0012 Intake A Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded P13B6 No Description P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire 6. WHAT I DID I decided to change the coil packs for cylinder 1 and 3 No change at all. So after i changed the spark plugs for cylinder 1 and 3 and still no change at all. Car would still not start. Erase the codes and ran the codes again and i got the same codes. 7. After i tried swapping Cylinder 1 with 2 to see if my new parts i just installed on cylinder 1 was bad and ran the codes. I still got a cylinder 1 and 3 misfire code. 8. Finally i got a P0016 Crankshaft Position Sensor Fault Code. 9. I decided to remove and clean the Solenoid Vanos At this point i decide to take it to the shop and they explained to me they couldnt find out the problem at all and recommended me to take it to the dealership. This shop was just a regular automotive shop btw not any BMW specialist. Any ideas what the problem is before i take it in to the stealership |

+1 on jcoop's recommendation. Need to use Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol 0W-40 instead. Mobil 1 5W-30 is not an LL-01 approved oil. OTOH, sorry I can't help you with your diagnosis. |

Was just the filter missing or did it have the filter o ring in place?
You've probably got trash in all the sensors man. Did you do an oil analysis? |

The problem is fixed. The engine's timing was off a few. Very strange. Even the shop was very very confused and surprised that a car with 48k miles had timing issues. They adjusted the timing and replaced one of the solenoids for the vanos and it works like a charm now. |
