If you want to appreciate the AC in the 1er, just drive an older 911.

So for the best experience with a stock 128i, disable the A/C and disable the traction control is the way to go? just one touch on the traction control or the 3 sec hold?
I know for the best experience I have to do some mods but for now I'm unsure if I want to mess with my remaining 2 year of warranty... |

I don't like my windows fogging up and don't want to have to replace the compressor (failure comes from extended periods of disuse).

The N52's revs do drop faster-- lighter internals, lighter flywheel, less rotational inertia to keep it spinning.

Can anyone verify the truth that you lose 10+ HP when the AC is on? Do you lose more the higher you have it cranked?

It certainly causes drag on the engine, but you will be hard pressed to notice the difference. When WOT, the AC is disabled, so peak HP is available regardless if the AC is switched on or not.

I can't say I've ever shifted so lethargically that the RPMs have dropped below where the next gear would want them to be.

Drive around with it off for 5-10 mins shifting normally, then turn the ac on and drive for 5-10 mins. You will mess up at least 1 shift in that amount of time, or your car is the only manual 128i in this thread that doesnt have the problem.

Did that when this thread was started. There is a difference, but I don't find it so drastic that I "mess up".

Indeed, just a matter of feathering the clutch for an extra quarter/half second.

Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up. My buddy always tells me that but my butt dyno has never noticed a true difference especially at WOT.

No problems shifting with or without A/C running; after 40+ years of driving manual trans, it's second-nature. Don't overthink it.

I drive an auto 128i and I do notice the loss in power when I have the A/C turned on.
