Anyone upgrade their oil cooler?
I was tracking my bone stock 135i this weekend and the oil temps were getting pretty high. When my car is warmed up on the street it sits around 230, but on the track it was up at 250-260. I think it was pushing 270 after 30 mins of pushing it hard on the track. Someone's 335 (also stock) was overheating and going into limp mode after about 20-25 mins so it's obvious these turbo engines have heating issues...
Wondering if anyone has upgraded theirs for the track and noticed a big difference.

I've run mine at the track 6-7 times and usually have engine temps running close to 270. The only time I've hit limp mode was, in my opinion, a combination of temp, high revs, high g cornering forces. It happened twice at the same track, same corner, same day, but no where else. Including a run session at a different track where engine temps were close to 275. I think there is more to limp mode than just engine temps or water temps. Certainly too hot will trigger limp mode, but I know of some cars that were hitting limp at 250. So it's either a build discrepancy between cars, or other factors that in combination trigger the fail safe.

Are your cars automatic or manual?
My experience is this My car its automatic The first time I run with the 135i it was stock and it was in apretty demanding track its a 2 mins or more track per lap its a wtcc official track and I got very high temps and I have to chill every 4 laps After that I bought a Setrab oil cooler so now i have oil coolers but then i installed jb3 and also I have dv forge , I came to another track its a 1 20 secs lap and i came to limp with map 4 with map 2 no probs I have to say im a in a high altitude Country Then last month in a short track with jb3 I could run like 5 laps and then a half engine icon This weekend I took off the jb3 and I could run 16 laps in one hit and I didnt reach the 135C the car was ok I just gave him one relax lap Soon I will run in the 2 mins track and I will see if the oil cooler can work or only for a few more laps Regards

Not sure if being automatic makes a difference but I'm 6 speed. My laps were anywhere from 1:50 to 2:00 depending on how poor my driving was... heh. But I was pushing it as hard as I could for 30 mins, so about 15 laps per session. I did 6 sessions over 2 days.
I feel like I was just on the edge of limp mode after the runs (but never actually went into limp so I have no idea). Seems like doing any sort of tune/flash without upgrading your oil cooler is a recipe for disaster on the track.

Pardon my extreme noobishness, but Intercooler = Oil Cooler?

If you look behind your front passenger side bumper through the wheel well, you'll see a little vent there, which is our oil cooler. On the other side there is none, but some upgrade systems put another on the other side, which should effectively double the heat dissipation.

Quick question on the same subject. If you had to change only one for track purpose, would you go with oil cooler or intercooler? Which one should give you more lap on a track without overheating?

^ oil cooler give you more time w/o going into limp mode
Intercooler give you more time with most of your power depends on how hot it is on the track, but our tiny stock intercooler usually max out before the oil starts overheating. but with the intercooler maxed, you get reduced power, but not limp mode. so you could still drive the car, just aren't as fast as it's when it's cold. you can easily cool down your intercooler between session I guess... spray water or even put ice around it. it's harder to get to the oil cooler, and you've to keep your car running while you spray water on the oil cooler. |

If I had to choose one, I would get the oil cooler hands down. It won't increase your performance, but your engine won't be overheating. Having to go into the pits and lose 5-10 mins of track time really sucks.
I plan on getting an upgraded intercooler as well. You won't really notice a direct limp mode with the intercooler, but you'll feel less power when the air is hotter, and less dense. With an upgraded intercooler, your turbos will actually only need to have less than stock boost to create the same amount of power as stock, because the air would be cooler and more dense.

Now, which oil cooler? And where to buy it? I've seen the HKS double oil cooler kit, but seems to me it will reduce the air flow to cool down the brakes because they sit right behind the two holes in the front bumper... that could be a big problem no? Anything else out there? |

VK Motorwerks has an oil cooler for the 335, not sure if it'd work with 135
http://www.vkmotorwerks.com/oilcoolerupgardekit.html Dinan has one too, but it's quite expensive |
