Funny, I like the 1M partly because it doesn't look like a traditional sportscar... The Cayman does look good to me too though, I'll give it that.

Finally picked up my 1M today, I also own a slightly tweaked CaymanS (Remus Racing Exhaust, IDP Intake Plenum, GT3 throttle Body and a Evoluton intake), weight aside it's conservatively close to a CaymanR in terms of power, adjustable suspension 19" wheels etc....I've really looking forward to my own comparison of the two cars even though realistically they are not anywhere near each other in terms of design, drivetrain, engine etc.
I was pleasantly surpised with my first drive (300 miles) of the 1M today, the ride quality vs handling was the first thing that hit me, handles so much better than the 135i MSport yet rides so much better thanks to no damn run-flats. I am looking forward to my own informal comparo of the 1M and the CaymanS altough based on the reviews out there I doubt anything new will come to light.

Finally, 20Gs is nothing to sneeze at....spend 5Gs-10Gs on basic mods to suspension, engine, and exhaust and you'll beat much the more expensive competitor, loose some weight, and sounds better....but then again, it's already a great package. |

Honestly, I would be very interested in your comparison. AFIK, none of the reviewers I've read so far have actually owned both cars.

Regardless personal preference ("I get the 1M/Cayman because to me it's a great driver's car. Period."), there's also the ego prejudice towards getting a Porsche, especially as fortysomething. See for example the Porsche quote of Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation" (01:24 - 01:30 of the video excerpt below).
It doesn't do justice to the excellence of Porsche cars and to all the Porsche enthusiasts getting one of those motoring marvels for all the right reasons, but, unfortunately, IMHO that's the way Joe Public tends to think (mainly because some people indeed get Porsches for boosting their ego towards the outside world). Although, I'm undoubtedly biased, BMW seems to be less plagued by the showing off perception. Okay, a debate whether, in the eyes of Joe Public, ///M cars are considered to be Q-cars/sleepers, could be controversial. However, as regards Porsches the perception will be more outspoken: definitely no Q-car/sleeper and more prestige. If a 1M and Cayman are parked next to each other and some frustrated, jealous idiot intends to vandalize one of them, may we reasonably assume that he'd rather have at least a go at the Cayman ? Also this aspect may be part of the equation in the decision process of 1M vs Cayman. |

I personally love the Cayman S and if I had the money would buy a Cayman R as a non-daily driver. I have ordered a 1M without ever driving one and have driven many Cayman's, 911's and Boxster's so hear is hoping that everything that I have heard about the fun factor of the 1M is true.
