Under the hood side filters

Not sure what their are called or what their for, but I cant seem to remove the little side filters filled with leaves with a few falling in. These removable plastic filters are located on the passanger and driver side.

Any concern about the leaves falling in or do they just drop down from the bottom of the car?

Thank you!

Mine are loose and can be easily removed for cleaning.

Aren't they the fresh air intakes for the cabin? I ususally just pick the leaves out by hand.

I thought they were just drainage. I assumed they were there to catch big leaves so you don't end up with decaying vegetation stuck inside the depths of your car. In any case, like BV said, I clean them out every week or two. My E92 had the same thing.

I usually just pull them out and dump whatever is in there but there were a few that managed to get past the filter, my hands are to big to actually get to them. Vacuum sounds like a good idea, Ill have to rig an extensions to get the ones that made it through.

This is what I am assuming they are for.

I may be wrong about this, but I think these are the air intakes. If you remove the HVAC filter cover, which is the long black housing in the center with about 6 screws holding it down, I think they're pulling air from the cavity that these vents open into. I haven't examined it closely though.

If that's the case, the leaves will just get caught in the cabin filters, which are pretty large, so it won't likely cause any problems.

I hope they are just water drainage. Last time I tried to remove the leaves and something (like nuts) dropped inside.

+1 to this! I think they are just for drainage.
