Alternative to PPK

So, I had a chance to hear an N54 335i with PPK for the first time today... I was shocked that it was the same motor that I have producing all those right noises!
I'm happy with the stock performance of my 135i, I don't feel like it needs more hp or torque but I could definitely use some of that sound!

Given all the tuning and flashing options, are there any software only alternatives to the PPK that would be more cost effective, while keeping the car California street legal and smog ready?
I already have D+KCAN cable...

Why not buy this guy's exceptional deal on a PPK2 that includes both the PPK software tune as well as the additional cooling hardware. Won't find a better deal than that.

Nice find! I emailed the seller for details. How would I go about getting the software portion of PPK2 coded? Isn't this VIN specific task, completed by a dealer and registered with BMW ag?

Sadly, I know a few N55 people who wanted that and shame to see it sit there.

I believe you take what's in the sealed envelope to a dealer and have them install the software. THEN it becomes vin specific upon installation. I think what's in the envelope is just some certificate/code for you to redeem at a dealer.

Adding the additional cooling hardware will obviously be more involved, but it includes a stronger radiator fan and that additional auxiliary radiator that goes in the lower driver's front air vent thingy. Not sure how easy/hard that is to do yourself, but I I think zx10guy recently did the install on his N55 as he was posting the instructions and such.

Here's that other thread I was referencing if you want some additional details. Lot of good information in here and you can open up the installation guides, etc.:

If you do decide to get PPK, you really should get the PE to go with it. They go together like... a coke and a smile, an old lady and 27 cats, Cheech and Chong, 2 peas in a pod, macaroni and cheese, Laurel and Hardy, peanut butter and jelly, Mary Kate and Ashley, etc. I'm sure you get the idea.

... like Romeo & Juliet, and John & Paul, and Micky & Minnie, and fish & chips. A classic combination.

You can always consider Dinan or OE Tuning. I am getting an OE custom tune this week along with an intercooler. I currently have a PPK1 BMW tune, but it does not add much power. Very conservative.
OE Tuning will take a N54 TT from 300 to 370. and Tq. from 300 to 380 for $595. Google it. good luck.
FYI - PPK1 is 320 HP/317 TQ. for 6MT
320 HP/332 TQ. for AUTO

I know there are some pretty awesome options out there, I'm just trying to stay away from anything that would require me to remove parts or reflash when I need to go for a SMOG or to sell the car... It appears the only 2 tunes meeting this criteria are PPK and Dinan up to stage 2.

I'm just getting the intercooler as an upgrade to the stock one. It is a direct fit with no cutting and with the increased boost of the tune it will give better IAT's. The OE flash can be flashed back to stock at any time. They also sell a inteface like COBB so you can change back yourself. I think Dinan is overpriced but I aggree Dinan is a good product. Good luck.

I thought of getting Dinan S2 but wasn't sure if I'd lose the pops and crackles of PPK. Some say I wouldn't (Chunner) but I didn't want to take that chance. Dinan said the dealer could remove the flash and refund my money if I wasn't happy but my Dinan authorized dealer said they didn't know anything about that. Besides, for me (N55) that's too much money, $2000 plus labor, for 35hp. 355hp (Dinan S2) vs 320hp (PPK). Nice torque bump, though 401ft-lb (Dinan S2) vs 317ft-lb (PPK). But that price - OUCH!

I hear you on that. I'm lusting after the tune mainly for the pops and crackles. I don't feel like the car is underpowered by any means.
