Excessive oil consumption

Hi everyone,

I bought a new to me 2011 135i with 44,000KM from dealership. It is CPO with warranty until April 2017. I made sure to check the oil level when i left the dealer and it was at maximum. Today leaving a friends house the oil light came on and it is below the minimum.

Is it normal to lose that much oil within under a week? I have been pushing it a little bit so it would be more use than regular city driving.

I'm going to add oil tomorrow, 5W-30 i assume, probably from the dealership.
I also want to tell them about it in case there is excessive oil consumption they will note it.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

From my experience if you're losing oil that fast it sounds like you were on a decline/incline when it measured the level. Have you tried making the measurement on a flat suface? That said, every time I've had slow oil consumption it was from leaking gaskets, but that was usually slow and steady over like 3-5k miles. Might want to check your valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, oil lines to turbos. I wouldn't add any oil until you let the car take a remeasurement if you haven't already.

I wouldn't panic just yet.

The oil level sensor is somewhat course to say the least. Add a quart, drive it, monitor it and see where it ends up after a more prolonged period.

Than you'll know.

Karl.

Thanks guys. I checked this morning after driving into work (only 5km) and it says it is at MAX level of oil. I am so relieved. When the warning popped up last night i was on a level surface and i was just 'driving hard' prior to parking (i let the car cooldown before shutting off) so i was worried.
