No, someone must have keyed it, the second line in the picture under the bigger one is actually the "peel" from the paint. I wet sanded it down then took it to my friend's shop and he buffed it out. 85% of it is gone but you can see the rest if you come up close. I'll have it resprayed when my friend has time. Btw, I parked next to the staff parking area, guess I won't be doing that anymore.

That sucks. I didn't think the lower cover was painted either. I have a beater car that I leave at the airport when I'm on a trip. It has saved me from a couple of headaches.

I'm going to revive this old thread because after searching it's the most appropriate place.

I've drilled into my kids to walk their bikes out of the garage and to never ride near my car. I've had scratches on the last two cars I've had (both BMWs) and now that they (my kids) are older, I was determined to never have that happen again.

Car was in the garage due to a flat tire (thanks TPMS, would have drove off with a 12 psi rear tire that looked fine). I'm walking out to the garage and I see the neighbor kid riding my son's old bike out of the garage right next to my car. Before I could say anything he went right into my front fender and put a nice deep scratch into the paint. The bike's grip had slid farther onto the handlebar so it was the rough metal end of the handlebar tube.

^$@$%#@!$#@!$#@!

Attached is the picture. I'm sick to my stomach. The car was perfect. Not even 10K miles on it. The neighbor offered to have it fixed, which I'm obviously going to take them up on, but there's no good way to fix it. I don't want the whole panel re-painted.

Does this look like it could be fixed without repainting the whole fender? I don't see how it can be made to look new again. (This is space gray metallic fwiw).

IMO, from the pics, looks easily fixed. Looks like clear coat only. It'll turn that kind of color as the surface finish gets all scuffed.

A decent auto parts store will have a variety of rubbing / polishing compounds in stock, not near the waxes but near any body work supplies they carry. Get something on the rougher end and finer end both, and finish off with wax. What you'll do is take a very little bit of the surface of the clear coat off, and get it even around that area. At the same time you'll be smoothing the surface itself, much like you would with fine sandpaper on a block of wood. Continue until it's so smooth it looks like nothing ever happened. Then wax of course or whatever you normally use (sometimes wax is a generic term these days).

If I'm understanding what I see in the pictures, what you have isn't all that big a deal.

I would be sick.... sorry to c this fellas... learned early on from my dad 'corner parks are a car's best friend'. I rarely if ever park in between two other cars. Hell, I recently threatened to ban my wife from the car because when she opened the door, all I could hear was her bangles knocking against the door.

@jkoral you could try to wet sand the area around the scratch and then use a porter cable or similar tool to buff with decreasingly rough pads.

check out detailingworld.co.uk

insane example of KDS wet sanding an entire E92 M3 to get rid of orange peel - http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=141365

obviously you wouldn't need to do your whole car..you get the point.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to get some quotes from the top couple detailers in the area.

That E92 is amazing. You can really see the orange peel in my picture. I can live with the orange peel on 135i, but would like a scratch free car.

I had a similar looking scratch on my sideskirt, it cost about $400 to be fixed, luckily the dealership picked up the tab since it was their fault

they painted the entire sideskirt, color matched perfectly. should be easily fixable by a quality shop

Just to follow-up, got multiple quotes from the few top shops in the area, all over $600. I'm getting it fixed the properly by what I feel is the best shop in the area.

Wow... expensive! Have you tried any rubbing compounds? I know "goof-off" works on some minor scratches that affects the clear coat not the other "goof" stuff that takes off everything.

That's such an expensive "oops". I'd be bummed as well. I had 120 something miles on my gti and parked it at a hotel a few years ago and someone put a dent and scratch it. I was furious.

You can put your fingernail in the scratch and really see how deep it goes, cutting through the clear coat and paint. The picture above is misleading, it really is deep.

If it *has* to be painted, the price is about right if they are removing the bumper cover, headlight, fender liner, and etc. to get the entire panel painted and make it look like it never happened.

If they are just going to mask things off, IMO you are paying too much, based on similar repairs I've had done in the past.
