Someone messed with my car... Help

Hey guys,

Quick background: I went on vacation this past Wednesday (7/18) to visit my parents in upstate NY. I returned last night to San Diego, (7/23) at 8:30PM and did not check my car until this morning. Upon inspection, I found a HUGE dent on my hood. (see pics below).

A few more relevant details: I live in an 12 story apartment building and park in a half enclosed parking garage. The front (hood, windshield, part of the roof) are exposed, while the rear is enclosed. Above my car is 12 floors of apartments with balconies. I found out from the super that an apartment above my car on the 10th floor had a "rowdy" party.

Dent Description: It certain angles, you can see the shadow/scratches in a "bottle" like structure. What do you think it looks like?

Either way, I am not sure the proper channels to have this taken care of. I do not want to report to my insurance, unless completely necessary. In addition, I may look into PDR because there is minimal paint damage, just dents.

Please help!

Thanks,
Evan

Does your car insurance cover accidental stuff like this? I know you'd rather not go there, but you might have to unless you wanna pay for this yourself.

You can also call the police (non emergency) to report vehicle damage while you were away and treat it as if it were vandalism. They could go question the party people and see if they can dig up anything. Then you'd definitely be getting insurance involved, but it's not a case where it's your fault, so it's really unlikely it would increase in any way.

Otherwise, paintless dent repair?

Does your apartment complex itself carry insurance? You might be able to seek coverage through their policy? If not, I would just make a comp claim through my own policy, but I'm not sure if that increases your premium or not.

Weird looking dents. I wonder what happened?

What are those white window like things on your car? Reflections? Tripping me out...

Otherwise, I would have to agree with 1Speed. I came out of Best Buy one day and found my mirror to be hanging from the cord, dented the side of my car. Think someone just ran right into it or something else. Called police, of course no camera so they can't do much about it; write you a report that they will never do anything with (they never find the car/person responsible). There is dent-removal body shops, I have been quoted on $50-100 to get a dent out . By that time, since you don't want to go through insurance off the bat, you could look into other choices. Look up CF hoods, and stuff like that. I am the type of person that feels if you got it dented out, repainted (if necessary?), it won't look the same as the body. Had it happen before for a front bumper repaint on my S2000, looked brighter than the rest of the car at angles, pissed me off.

My SUV was hit in the parking lot at Lowe's earlier this year. I was picking up some wood at night and did not notice the damage until several days later (I drive it intermittantly since I also drive my 128i convertible). I called a body shop recommended by a friend and they suggested going to the insurance since I could get it covered under uninsured motorist. When you have a claim against this area, it does not raise your rates. I called my agent to confirm and they did. Then they asked for a police report. I did not report it because of the time lag but I went in to do so. They would not do a report but gave me a form I could fill in and send to the state which was equivalent. I needed help from my agent with one portion of the form but we got it done. The insurance would have covered it under collision but in that case the deductable made it hardly worthwhile since they would also consider it as a factor in rates. But everything worked out and I got the lower deductable. I paid for some scratches I put on the spare tire cover to be fixed at the same time.

Bottom line is if you have uninsured motorist you should do a police report and get it covered that way.

Angerman- the patterns on the hood are reflections from solar panels at work.

The super said he was going to speak to the apartment that had the party and ask them directly about the incident. We'll see if there are decent human beings in this world!

Tomorrow I will try to get a PDR quote.

Definitely looks like someone walked on your car. Footprint is what I see.

Insurance should cover it under a no-fault, comprehensive clause with no penalty to you. At least, that's what would happen here if that happened to my car.

I would get insurance involved ASAP, and maybe file a police report of vandalism.

That's crappy for you, sorry.

evBecks, sorry for your damage. I live in San Diego and have used a dentless repair person I would highly recommend- someone ran a bicycle into my wife's Prius and left a quoted $1200 body shop repair. Dents & Dings made it like new for $185.

Those shops cover smaller dings and creases. This definitely looks like a body shop repair to me.
OP...I feel for you. I would be livid.

The repair shop I dealt with on my SUV will give a tentative quote based upon pictures. If you have similar firms where you live, you might be able to get an idea of the cost without even traveling to the body shop.

For some reason I cant see the pics at work however just file a comp claim for vandelism. If Cali is like most other states, not at fault comp claims dont affect your premiums.

appreciate to comments guys... unfortunately my deductible is quite high so it depends on how much it will cost before I issue a claim.

I will update when there is new info.

OH man. I saw footprint right away. That is ridiculous. Especially being mostly covered, they still had the nerve! No cameras on the premises that could have caught the act? I have no helpful advice for you but just wanted to say good luck with getting it all fixed up and remember Karma will catch up to them!

Sorry to see that damage. I'm currently waiting on my car to get out of the body shop from being rear-ended. I feel your pain. Hope it turns out well.

To me, it looks like a shoe? is it a bottle?

You're lucky, because I don't see obvious paint damage. Take your car to paintless dent repair place and they'll fix it for you for a few hundred bucks, maybe even cheaper. And just run Meguiar's Ultimate Compound lightly and it will look as good as new.
Unless you have good insurance and deductible is less than $100, I would not report to insurance.
Good luck!

This guy can can fix it and he is in San Diego. I have have used him a few times he is the best PDR guy I have ever used. I used myke about year ago as I had big dent in the roof of a 135 that he removed with the glue pull dent removal. Very few PDR guys can do the glue pull dent removal.
