PE/N55 Mids Sound Clip Request
Hi all,
I'm specifically after some sound clips of N54 & N55 cars with: N55 midpipes, BMW Performance Exhaust & Y-Pipe resonator delete installed. I'm installing N55 mids on my N54 car this weekend and before I go hacking off the resonator I want to know if it is for me. Also, can anyone offer any opinions; does removing the resonator on N55 mids make much difference, if so, what? Thanks Last edited by Cozy; 01-29-2013 at 09:21 AM.. |

I thought it was too quite with the resonator still on the stock mids. It's the same tone just more volume with the y-pipe installed. This video was taken the day after I installed it. The tone has actually changed(improved) with more miles on it.

Hi froop!
My thoughts were that as its only the turbo and DP configuration that differs once N55 mids are fitted to both, the sound would be similar although perhaps still quieter on N54 due to twin-cat DPs. Would I be right? |

I'm not 100% sure but from what I've read and from the videos I've see there's definitely seems to be a difference. N55's seem to have a throatier sound to it like with the M135i. I've yet to see/hear a videoclip of an N54 which sounds anywhere near as good. N54's seem to just have a predominantly bassy sound to it and lack the character of the N55. I've driven a friend's N55 135i with an Eisenmann exhaust and it sounds epic with tons of overrun burble and pop but the clips of N54's with the Eisenmann exhaust seem to sound completely different. Much more tame. It would be interesting to see a comparison of an N54 and N55 car with the exact same exhaust mods though.

Thanks Froop.
Well I am guessing your friend's Eisenmann has some sort of resonator delete for the factory N55 midpipe? That seems to be key in the burbles although my PE without resonator delete still burbles quite a bit. I'm suprised to see so many people running N55 mids on N54 cars but none with a resonator delete. That said I think that a majority of those with N55 mids on N54 cars do not have PE or have a 1M. It looks like I am test pilot then; perhaps me and kleach can arrange for some similar videos to be recorded to show the difference. I guess the benefit is that if I don't like it I can just put the resonator back on. |

Well, I did it...
...and the difference in sound vs PE on resonated N54 midpipes is just incredible. Before, my car sounded quite muted but it just screams now and pops so much. The drawback being that it only has 20miles on it and sounds as new/raw as hell. I love the note but I hope it gets a little more bassy and a little quieter when it all cokes up in a few hundred. Drone? Well yeah, some near 3k but that's expected with no resonator. I took a few pics and vids which I'll post up separate later. |

Yes! Removing the resonator makes the exhaust burble and breathe so much better! I love the sound of mine, I had the resonator removed when I put my Berk race axel back on...I can send you a video of the sound if you like, but itll be a LOT louder than the BMW PE...
PM me if interested |
