R-S3 v/s RE-11
I have RS3 on my old 325E and love the way they stick. I've been planning to put them on my 135 because with mods, I am traction challenged. Reading comparisons on Tirerack, it seems the RE-11's are very highly rated and cheaper, even topping the RS3. Any opinions would be appreciated. I would be 99% street driving in summer only. Wet traction is not a major concern. Traction is. I would think that the RS3's in the 140 treadwear version v/s 200 treadwear version RS3 would offer more traction than the RE-11 which are either 180 or 200.
Thanks!

The RS-3 needs heat to get to optimum grip. This is a track tire that fits the "Street" category. Not the best tire for daily commutes as they will wear fast and never offer their grip potential unless you can really warm them up, which is kind of no likely to occur on public roads.
The RE-11 is really street worthy, and also suitable for tack duty. I found that they wear just as fast, but offer much better traction when cold and under rainy conditions. I also found the RE-11 to grip even when they are fully worn (bald). So, choose depending on your need.

I've driven on RE-11s and they are absolute garbage compared to ZIIs and RS3s.
Give up grip very early, cannot recover, don't have any grip near the levels of RS3 |

Both are great tires, but the R-S3's are by far better on the track. On the street they are a wash with maybe a slight edge to the RE-11's especially when cold. I have had both and I have tracked both. The R-S3's are a bit noisier to begin with, but after some track time the RE-11's get noisy as well.
As far as the tread wear rating is concerned I read that the compound is the same in both the 140 and 200 it's just that when the were new they had to rate them as such and once more long term testing was done they re-rated the same compound knowing that it is more of a 200 tread wear rating. Great for us Lemons racers, because they now qualify and they are the best on track. |

For street use, I'd probably just run the RE-11s. I've driven on them before and liked them quite a bit! Both tires are great though.

I concur. I'd prefer the RE-11 for street use and the RS3 for the track.

After burning a few sets of both, I concur. RE-11 better suited for high performance street use or light duty track days, where the RS3 is better suited for track use.
