Our 128 is at the BMW dealer now to have the brake light replaced. Supposed to pickup tomorrow. This will be the third for this car. If BMW has been able to fix this, great. If not, I will escalate the issue... I am not going to be going back to the dealer each month.

Actually car was ready today and we have it back now. Has new third brake light and no cracks so far. Will check daily. According to dealer (at least this this appeared to be their opinion), the brake light is slightly curved and if the end bolts are tightened incorrectly, it will put stress on the center and may crack. Will report back if we have more cracks. The dealer has been very helpful btw...

Well, my second third brake light cover has now completely fallen off. Half of it last week and the second half this week.
I guess I will be stopping by the dealership soon (again). |

I feel everyone else heres pain... I noticed a small crack starting to form in the middle of my REPLACEMENT third brake light cover...
I emailed my SA... I might as well go show them this now since it takes 2 weeks to get a new one in anyway (by then the thing will probably have fallen off)..

Good news:
I got my second brake light cover fixed last week and BMW now has a fix for the cracking that involves a spacer kit. I assume it relieves the stress on the cover. The service manager should be able to find the bulletin in the computer with no problem. |

I got mine replaced on Saturday...so far so good. I took photos of the new one so it's timestamped just in case it happens again...praying that it doesn't.

I had mine replaced about 2 weeks ago. They said there was a BMW serviced bulletin on HOW to properly re-install the light cover.
The KEY is to tell the service mechanic NOT TO OVER-TORQUE the 2 spring-loaded studs. That is what puts pressure on the plastic, initiating a stress crack. Apparently, these studs are all over-tightened at the factory in Germany. |

YES... very common. YES, they'll replace under warranty. Make sure you remind them not to over-torque the spring-loaded studs. Otherwise, you'll have another cracked light a few months from now.

Damn. I called them and the SA said he'd never heard of it! Bringing the car in for them to take photos this afternoon, is there a bulletin I can point him to?

I got kinda screwed with this... someone bumped me months ago when they were parking and didn't leave a note (i noticed a ding like someones license plate screw on my back bumper the next morning) and then 3 weeks later my light broke... the dealer said the bump might have caused enough pressure and been a cause in the light breaking... so I had to pay and couldn't really argue...
but then the replacement broke about 2 weeks ago and they replaced this one for free.... but they did mention about a service bulletin being posted b/c this is a common issue..

There's a BMW service bulletin; they should know about it. At least there is one for BMW North America. The Service Director told me. Also, if you just search on this thread, you'll see DOZENS of folks with this problem... almost all had their lights replaced under warranty. |

I had mine replaced yesterday in about 45 min. Two other 1's on the lot had cracked ones as well. I told the SA but he didn't care. One of the sales guys said they often see them laying on the ground from the Z4 and 1.

Another one here
I took a look today for curiosity's sake, and I too have a cracked 3rd brake light cover. We should start a tally, no?

Hey folks,
I was approaching my car and I noticed a red plastic piece on the ground. The 3rd brake light!! Somehow it just fell off! My car has been only driven for 2 months and about 5000 kms, and I take good care of it. Pretty bizarre!!! Called the dealer, and they are going to replace it under warranty. It's great to have the info on this board, because I will be equipped with ammo when I go in tomorrow. Good to know that there was a service bulletin about this. Talk about a runaround though. I need to go in to fill in some paperwork, and then they will order the piece. They wouldnt do this over the phone. After tomorrow, I have to go in next week to get it replaced.

Just wanted to provide a quick update from my end. The dealer told me that it even happens to some of the new cars on the lot. Mainly a crack in the middle.
If this happens to anyone else, do not pay for it. It is covered under your warranty...
