help with cool carbons
got some pads put in and the back ones started screeching so loud that i don't even want to drive the car anymore. i tried bedding them and i was super gentle on them before i did that for about 200 miles of driving.
they are at the point now that they not only screech, but they also are making a grinding sound as well. any suggestions? or should i go buy new rear pads? or a different brand like hawk? this is becoming a nightmare to me thanks for any input guys \ |

did you put a pad in backwards??? I've seen that before. Other than that those pads should be quiet.

OP, check for scoring on your rotors. Grinding and screeching with CCs does not sound normal at all. Most likely something is installed incorrectly or you have some kind of foreign object stuck against the rotor surface.

I'd go back...something is off.....did the screech immediately or only after a while of driving? May just need to give them a clean to get some of the caked up dust out of there.

The screatching started after about 100 miles of driving. I think it's just all the dust from the old pads. It's weird cause the front brakes are quiet as a mouse but it's BOTH back ones. I checked them and they're on correctly so who knows. Should I just give them time and maybe spray some brake cleaner in there too? I figure if it doesn't go away in another week I should get another set of rear pads. They're really annoying me badly

I'd pull them off, clean the entire area with brake cleaner very well, scuff up the rotors on both sides with a piece of wet-sandpaper in a circular motion using the brake cleaner as a lubricant and reinstall the pads using liberal amounts of brake grease on the backing plate touch points.

So, only the fronts were replaced/are Cool Carbons and now the un-replaced OEM rears are making the noise?

It's really loud too. And sometimes it does it and other times it won't. But, it does it everyday. Just depends on how hot they are at a given time I think.
They kinda feel like the pads might be lose too cause they clink sometimes but all the parts were replaced new. Even the sensors. It's nuts and its annoying. |

I think it is because you replaced the pads and left the used rotors on there. Take a picture of the rotor for us to show the condition of it.

here's a picture i took today. didn't drive the car for a couple days and noticed this spot of what looks like where the rotor was stopped while it sat. (car is garaged if that matters)
this has turned out to be a nightmare. i'm about to replace the rotors AND get new pads again. i feel like the pads will screech on new rotors too. |

I replaced my front and rear rotors with performance rotors + cool carbon brake pads at the same time. Zero noise. I am even using Hardbraking Ti shims in the front. I bedded them in with 10-15 aggressive stops (accelerated bedding technique) as per their instruction on the coolcarbon website.
The marks you have on the rotors isn't anything bad. You must have washed the car and not driven it for 5-10 minutes afterwards. I forgot to do this once when I first installed the pads and the front and rear rotors stuck to the discs resulting in a loud *clunk* when I reversed out of my garage. Had to perform a bedding procedure again to make the marks go away completely but even then, no noise. http://www.coolcarbonperformance.com/faq.html

I had cool carbons for about 35k miles and never had a problem. When I did them, I replaced the front rotors, but did not replace the rear. Occasionally in cold weather, there would be some minor squeal, but it was less squeal than the oem stock pads.
Sounds like an install issue, as grinding does not seem normal. The rears are so easy to install, why not just take the wheel off and check? The clunking sounds like maybe the backing plates and shims weren't used properly (or at all). That would make them clunk sometimes when changing directions (forward to reverse or reverse to forward), because there is some play in the pad. Tim

yeah there's just something messed up with the rears. they're starting to like fall apart. the corners of them have pieces chipping off almost as if they are dried or something. i haven't even tracked the car or beat on it with them yet. so weird. i need to call the place i got them from and bitch
