Seatbelt on vert flaps w/window down

Do you all have the windscreen? I have it, and I've never had flapping. But, come to think of it, even when I drive with the windscreen down, I don't get flapping.

I tried the seat way-up, as well as all the way down (do not recommend doing this while traveling on the highway as I was!), and I seemed to get a little less with it up, and more with it down, but I couldn't eliminate it. I also realized that I'm just not comfortable unless the seat/pedal/steering/dash relationship is just right.

I'm sure there are other factors, such as my somewhat rounded shoulders, the seatback angle, and the horizontal seat position that affect it. And no, I don't have the windblocker.

Actually with my last car (Pontiac Solstice) I had no real choice -- if I had the windows down above 70 I had difficulty just breathing the air because the buffeting was so high. One time I was on a fairly high bridge (Pines Blvd over 75) and a fast crosswind suddenly caused a complete void inside the cabin, and for a few seconds I actually couldn't breathe at all. Freaky, but a few yards farther on it was fine.

To be honest, I haven't had an opportunity (between my schedule and the weather) to drive my 135 on the highway with the top down yet. Maybe it won't be as bad. I'll have to try it... since I don't want to be lame.

While we're all lame at one time or another, I find my 128i to be acceptable to about 70~80 mph, although on long interstate drives (100+ miles), I tend to keep the top up.

Lots of folks swear by the BMW accessory wind blocker although I haven't bought one on the theory that top driving should include at least some wind!

I had the windblocker on my Z4, but the 1 is calm enough that I don't need it. However, there've been times when my wife & I would go to a dinner party, and without the blocker, I have to put the top up or she'll get crazy-hair.

I'm topless so long as it isn't raining or I'm baking. Can't stand sweating in my car. So almost any time I'm in the car above 90 opt 95 the top is up.

I'll do low to mid 90's if I'm moving, but crawling in Friday afternoon traffic @96 degrees is a recipe for a soaked shirt.

A friend recently bought an Infitity G37 ht-vert with A/C seats, says it's great on super hot days, but you have to get used to the sensation that you've just wet yourself.

Wow. I wondered about that, looked at the G37 myself (didn't fit in my tiny garage). I would have taken a cooled-seats option on a 135 at pretty much any cost; maybe they'll add that in the future. I use AC with the top down all the time.

Honestly, I don't find the 1'er seats getting too hot and sweaty on a sunny day. Maybe because of the Boston Leather and the fact that it's so dry in California during the summer.

I agree. The seats are great, it's the driver who's sweating all over the place. When it's 95, and my back is up against lukewarm leather, my shirt will be soaked. But air-cooled seats provide a cool airflow.

OP is right. The design of the seatbelt holder is badly exposed to the wind, therefore it makes a lot of noise.

It's simply an atrocious design, like so many other things on the 1. (Water dripping from the side mirrors onto the body or wipers that are damaged if the bonnet is opened while they are retracted come to mind).

@doublevanosrc: this has nothing to do with buckling the seatbelt or not. Besides, whether or not to buckle is each driver's own decision.

@swaite: This isn't at all a "common issue on all verts." My TT didn't do it.

The only solution I see would be to REMOVE it, seatbelt and all. Or perhaps some enterprising third party could mold a plastic deflector that could be put into place around it and reduce the wind noise.

So I drove some with the top down at 70-80 today and it seemed quite calm in the cockpit. I could even hear the stereo. Very cool.

I did notice the seatbelt buffeting, but it didn't seem like that big of a deal.

I've taken the car topless up to about 130. And there really isn't any necksnapping buffeting.

BMW claims the Boston leather with "Sun Reflective Technology" greatly reduces heat from the seats. While I still appreciated the top and A/C in Las Vegas at 112o, my Coral Red leather is quite comfortable in 90o temps, even here in the humid DC area.
