128i 0-60 in 5.9 seconds!

Greeings,

Not sure if this has been posted here or not, but I was reading a recent shootout article which pitted the 128i against the Mini Clubman (yeah, that didn't sit well with me either) and interestingly enough, the numbers they got with the 128i confirmed what I always suspected. The 128i is faster than what BMW has printed in its marketing materials.

Taken from the Edmunds article:
"A 14.3-second quarter-mile performance at 96.5 mph puts the 128i in considerably quicker company than the Mini, which cranks through the quarter-mile in 15.2 seconds at 91.9 mph. Holeshot acceleration goes to the BMW as well. Its 5.9-second sprint to 60 mph is well ahead of the Mini's 7.2-second effort."

I've always suspected my 128i was much faster than people give it credit for. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise though. I'd guess it wouldn't be smart to showcase the fact that their entry level car is actually faster than a lot of their higher priced fleet.

Manufacturer's numbers are almost always conservative. No surprise at all. They do the same for the 135i, and most of their cars.

Thats what I pinned it at waay before it came out. The 328i does it in 6.1sec when tested by the magazines.

A 6-speed 128i coupe would be about as fast as an E46 ZHP. Hardly underpowered.

what do you estimate a 0-60 time would be for a 128 with a sports exhaust and intake

Not to steal the thunder away from the 128's, but what does a 135 make down the 1/4 mile?

This is also right in line with C&D mag's 6.1" time for the slightly heavier 128i convertible a few months back.
