tools, I am not sure, auto parts stores have some trim removal tools, but you may want to see if sponsors have a factory BMW kit you can buy. here's a thread from an e81 that I found was helpful and may work for you http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtop...=5751&start=90

you probably do not need to go to the dealer but I cannot be sure on that one. programming means it's programmed to your individual car I think, where as activation just means it's alive I guess, though I am not sure- for me mine is activated and programmed for another car so the phone picks it up as the last 5 numbers of some other car's VIN (the previous owner) but it fools the radio so it works fine, I think that covers it post any more questions and I'll try to help

thank you very much..
I try to understand..If i don't need to go to the dealer, how the radio can "understand" i have installed the bluetooth kit..Because for the moment, i don't have the Bluetooth item on the radio (which you have when the option is installed and when you click on the Radio Menu button)
So if i don't need an activation, how activate this Item ? Only by installing the mic and the BT antenna?

if you dont already have the BT activated then you will probably have to go to the dealer and have them activate it, mine came as a TCU from an e90 that was already coded and activated, if it is activated and the car doesnt pick it up then you need to make sure the phone fiber optics and other cables are all plugged into it

I'm still waiting on my bluetooth antenna, then i'll have some feedback on this retrofit (hopefully some pictures and whatnot). I'm going to be trying something a bit different with the overhead console

what do you plan for the console- I was thinking about going back and doing all the pics but it's so much work and my camera sucks and I was so excited when I finally got it to work that I just didn't want to do it, your pics may relieve my pm box!

Well your retrofit IS of great interest to many of us...hint, hint...LOL. So pics would be nice. IRT what Tom@Eas said about the coding: If we pick up a kit w/TCU....does it need to be coded? If I pick up a MoBridge kit WHO will code it?

if you pick up a kit that was already in a car and activated (in an e9x or e8x, not the bigger models as they are more complex) then it should be able to fool your cars radio into its own VIN. if you pick up a new kit then it will need to be coded. If you pick up a mobridge, I am not sure, you'd have to ask Tom. the mobridge is probably the easiest way to go if you don't mind not having BMW parts in there. for me, I already had the bmw parts when the mObridge came out so I didnt want to spend extra money on that.

So I finally decide to install some bluetooth today. Unhooked the battery, pulled up the trunk panel, then I see there's only one bundle of wires (the small bundle for sat radio). I guess they stopped prewiring with bluetooth

There might be a decent retrofit kit on the for sale forum soon hehe

I might have to look into the mobridge kit

sent pm, don't think they stopped pre-wiring- I would look again, but as for mobirdge, if you aren't prewired then you probably can't even do that

Ok one second, I opened it up before, it was 3 wires, nothing like the ones attached to the tcu I got off ebay (one fiber, and 2 other little wires)

Here it is

WOW, if it's not there and not off to the side of the trunk in its own bundle then I guess they stopped pre-wiring, probably to save costs. All I can say then is that sucks for you and potentially for mObridge too.

wow, then it does seem as if 09s are not prewired, may want to find another with an 09 and no assist to make sure they just didn't miss it only on your car, I just can't believe they cheaped out so much

it's under the panel under the steering wheel and it is usually tucked way up under there and pretty hard to find, though if you don't have the wiring set in the back then you probabaly don't have this part either, could look into buying the whole wiring harness

I'll go by the dealer tomorrow and ask them about it, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. No prewire/no year of the one

The guys at the dealership weren't much help "you want bluetooth wiring? All you have to do is sync the phone up its wireless!"

We checked the trunk of an 09 built near the end of 08 and it also did not have the wiring harness, unless they moved that harness somewhere else its beginning to look like I'm out of luck

yea thats what I was afraid of, wow I cannot believe how cheap they are getting on the 09s, so for the 09 cheaping out list I have so far:

only one texture of leather vs the two textured of 08 which had smooth napa like leather on the outside of the seats with the regular textured middle pieces and then the no pre-wiring for phone

They removed the 2 leather tone seats because people were complaining the smooth sections of leather were wearing out real quick.
