I don't follow the HPFP threads too much and someone might have rule it out. It seems to me that 135i and the 335i are the only cars that have the problem, and bmw have problems fixing the problem.
Has someone discuss the possibility of a different component that may be causing the pump failure?

As always Andrew, you are beacon of kindness with your willingness to share your knowledge. I will check out the pipework you mentioned later today and let everyone know how it went.
Ok, just had a look at the pipework and can't seem to find anything loose. However, when I was putting my hand down beside the charge pipe I felt that there is a pipe that just seems to end and is open. I'm not sure how to describe it but if you look at the charge pipe, there is a pipe below it and a little beside it (on the inner skirt side). That pipe goes down into the engine bay towards the gearbox but just ends after about a foot or so. I can't seem to find anywhere where it would join up, so is it supposed to be open like that?

Interestingly having the car as stock is a major cause of HPFP failure (just kidding).
Well, it would be interested to know the flip side of the coin to see who hasn't had a failure yet. There's a strong mode with Shell fuels over 50%, and I don't believe shell have 50% of the market. So, the data might actually point to something? Of course the only way to tell is to have people do the survey who hasn't had a failure.

I use Caltex Vortex mainly, or BP Ultimate if I am on the highway, unless I am driving pass virginia which means Shell V Power. 90% Caltex use - I don't drive pass anything apart from Caltex on my normal travels.

Crew - I seriously doubt this is a Fuel quality issue
Its about material reliability IMHO. All OEM face the same dilemma - Cost v Longevity. JD - I have used all types 91, E10, 95 etc and have yet to experience HPFP failure I know in My 68 Mustang anything but BP100/98 gives me grief and lower performance if that helps |

Yes, that's it. I realised it's just part of the charge pipe (that's the charge pipe isn't it, with that side noise maker pipe attached?) after I posted that last entry.
Hopefully BMW can find where the leak is on Tuesday.

Have a good look / feel on all the vacuum hoses. I had an issue where one of the vacuum hoses going from the vacuum collectors to the wastegates wore through, it was rubbing on the engine block, so I would get constant 30ee codes and no boost.
BMW fixed it just in time for double demerit's on the long weekend |

Ok, update time. All of the hoses are fine, so it's not a boost or vacuum leak. The HPFP is fine as it was only replaced less than a week ago. Westside service have been in contact with BMW head office (not sure, Melbourne or Germany) all day and they've run a bucketload of tests and discovered that it is the fuel pump that is failing.
However, contrary to popular failings, it's the low pressure fuel pump that is not coming to the party. I'm glad now that they've done a heap of digging and seem to have found the root of the issue. They have conducted specific tests on that pump and verified that it is not running as it should. Fingers crossed I get the car back tomorrow and all will be well with the world again.

UPDATE: The car has been back in my hands for a week now and it hasn't skipped a beat. I can now hear the fuel pumps prime when I unlock the car (before it was a very muted sound but now it's as if they are trying to suck a hole through the bottom of the fuel tank) so I'm thinking that the pumps were faulty from delivery.
Anyway, the car is all better, although fuel consumption is up slightly (by about 1L/100km), but I'm happy to live with that knowing my car is running as it should.

I had an early 08 delivery car. Still haven't had the HPFP fail. Yet.

35,000 kms. But it was quite cold this morning, not sure if that had anything to do with it. Scanned it and there are no codes.

True, I'm at 33,000km's and mine are becoming more frequent. I got my first one around 31,000km's. I notice it occurs more often during cold starts and also in colder weather.

I've been dreading saying this, but I've been ok so far and have just ticked over 21,000km during an 18month period. As seems to be the case though, it's almost a matter of "when" not "if"

That's because you're secretly driving the M1 prototype and they've addressed the issue at factory prior to delivery.
