If you look closely, he is only going at 150 KM/H not 160 MPH as the video is titled. 160mph is 240 km/h and getting passed at that speed the Corvette would need to have been going probably 300 km/h +.
In reality the Vette was probably going something like 220 or something. Not that impressive for a car like that (or a 1er for that matter). I agree that it is irresponsible to be going at such a speed on a road with traffic. Just need someone to pull out in front of you and you've got a problem on your hands.

reminds of a time on the autobahn. I was in a Ford Fiesta going about 140 and got b lown away by a C63 (could tell by the front fascia before he passed me). It was something similar to this, but I didnt need to change my pants afterwards.

I used to live in the UK and drove over to Germany about once or twice a month to visit my parents. I have done my fair share of autobahn driving and know instinctively what speed a car must be doing at the minimum. To be able to pass someone doing 140-150km/h like that he has to be doing a minimum of 260km/h + I remember doing 250km/h in my dad's 7 series and got overtaken by an F40 and F50 at the same time. Man that was cray.... I think easily 300km/h +. When you do enough driving at high speed you just know someone is doing 250+ as there is a distinctive sound when they pass you and also how quickly they become a blur. |

Imagine going down the back straight at a track topping 160km/h in your [insert grocery getter] and getting overtaken like that. I would say around 240-260km/h accelerating.

I passed a cop at 220kph a few weeks back
I was in Germany at the time so I'm not typing this from jail. It was a good feeling.

Gah I'm so jealous of your auto-bahn!! Australia has some of the toughest laws on speeding... it's so easy to lose your licence and speeding tickets are huge revenue raisers for the government!!

Yeah I know. I'm 'from' Melbourne. Well NZ actually but I have a house in Elsternwick...
I received 3 speed camera tickets in my last 3 months in Melbourne for driving between 4 and 8 kms over 60kph. In Belgium everyone drives at least 20kph over the speed limit.

I lived in Hungary for six months and before then also did a few 3-4 month trips through western europe. Here, it's like people build up frustration at having cars that could do 180-220, and then do that on the freeway because they think they can - with no experience at that speed and with a road that does not cater for anywhere near that speed. |

FYI at 255km/h (indicated on the speedo - probably a bit less in actual speed) the car felt safe and very stable. I think the speed limiter was kicking in as I appeared to have stopped accelerating. I had the video of the run on Youtube briefly but took it down for obvious reasons. Tassie traffic cops are not as Gestapo as their mainland counterparts, regardless if they caught me at 255km/h, no amount of explaining would save me....

It's the old story: we need better driver training, not ever more punitive rules (that book people for exceeding the speed limit by 1 or 2 km/h) if we want to reduce the road toll. Anyway the road toll I believe is historically pretty low now compared to the old days based on the number of people on our roads today. Not due to the draconian speed limits but because of the improved active and passive crash safety of modern cars. End rant.

Sure, there are some places in Europe that have shithouse roads, but seriously, look at ANY freeway in Europe, and compare it to the Hume Hwy, the F3 or even the M2/M7 (Sydney's latest motorways and our 'crowning glory' of roads) and Aussie roads have nothing to compare at! |

It's not all good over here. Belgium roads are pretty terrible, and German autobahns seem to be 90% roadworks.
But in between the roadworks you can go 300kph if you like, so it's not all bad You're right about them being better drivers though. I just did a big trip round Germany with my parents from NZ and they kept commenting how everyone was courteous and careful. No one sits in the fast lane unless they are going fast (really fast) and everyone knows to indicate and take care changing lanes because the difference in speed of the two cars can be as high as 200kph. I hate to think of the carnage that would ensue in NZ or Oz if the speed limits were removed... but they could certainly bloody lighten up a bit with them.

a french friend of mine came out to australia and couldn't stop telling me how bad we are at driving, and i had to agree with him, the driving here is terrible compared to europe.
then an Indian friend/business associate came out here and couldn't stop telling me how good the roads and driving were. and when i thought about it i had to also agree with him. so its not all bad. |
