Go for it, definitely. I'd be a bit surprised if they knock you back. You don't need to provide your driving record details, unless you held a license in another state for part of that time. I can't remember if there was a special form you need to fill out, but you definitely need to write a letter saying that you recognise you did something wrong and that it was most unusual, and here's my driving record to prove it. Don't be a smart arse in the letter, or try to make excuses - you won't stand a chance with that angle.

Hahah i paid up

Checked out those links you kindly gave me and said you had to have 10 years driving record. I was all clean, but only 7 years.

Plus, I did put my foot down (to pass a car who'd just pulled out), so was fair enough.

Ah well. Next time maybe. My wife got away with it with only 8 years between speeding fines so I don't think the 10 years is too strict. Like you said it probably depends on the circumstances.

So how's you infra red vision going?

No police LIDAR unit operating in Australia projects a beam in the visible spectrum.

Lol! Nice bull dust kiddo No LIDAR operates in any unvisible spectrum. Seeing as though you're so in tune with how the systems operate, then you'd know that LIDAR uses much shorter wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (compared to Radar/doppler pings), typically in the ultraviolet visible range. Hence when the beam narrows (say, when the target comes closer to the source), the source of the beam becomes visible.

Do as Johnny Walker, and keep walking.

Try harder next time kiddo

Yeah - just thought the fine was fair enough in the end. Has your beauty been sold yet? Was hoping for another SH drive day this year!

Laser red dots

OK.....

1. Seeing as you live in NSW the police were probably using Prolaser II or Prolaser III. It operates at 904nm which is in the infrared band of the EM spectrum. Not ultraviolet as you incorrectly state. Even if you weren't in NSW it might have been a UTI Ultralyte. Guess what? It also operates at 904nm, the same as every other police LIDAR unit in Australia. 904nm is invisible to the human eye. And by the way, "ultraviolet visible range" is an oxymoron.

2. The Doppler shift that it sounds like you are trying to describe is a real effect but it sure as hell is of insufficient scale to shift a 900nm wavelength into the visible spectrum at motor vehicle speeds. Furthermore, beam divergence has got nothing to do with wavelength or Doppler shift.

3. Unvisible isn't a real word but I'll forgive you on that one

So, please tell us more about this red dot that you saw when you got lasered by the police? Or would you prefer to rephase?

Calming down after your immature abusive post which you thankfully deleted?

ProLaser II & III both use MPL (Micro Pulse Lidar) systems which are visible once the beam reaches a convergence pulse range. MPL is retina-safe and visible. It has nothing to do with the spectrum you operate in, as no civil LIDAR uses over 1000nm (940nm is in the laser spectrum, so your claim that it's infra-red is false), and has a LOT more to do with pulserate and distance from source.

I couldn't find one that said unvisible, but I did find this one in an attempt to lighten the mood.

I don't know which wiki reference you are getting this gobbly gook from but with all due respect, you are way out of your depth. I've been working with night vision and laser ranging and targeting systems in a professional capacity for over a decade.

If you think you can see at 900 nanometer laser, that's fine with me.

I think Tay works in Public Relations, so of course he knows more about physics than you!

Obviously not one that i'm involved in, but now a 4th generation family business is in marine navigation systems, radar and weather modelling.

Quite an Interesting argument.

My 2 cents.

The red do you saw was to do with the targeting system. This red dot is also displayed on the HUD of the unit which is superimposed upon the speed and direction of the vehicle. The red dot in the HUD will allow the police officer to confirm that he has indeed targeted your car.

I will disagree as well that no pulse convergence will make the light visible. From this unit just not possible.
