So I'm having to wait at a fast food place, whataburger, which is notorious for taking a long time in the drive-through. So as I'm pulling out after sitting for 10 minutes or so, the warning light comes up telling me that I need to drive in order to cool off the engine. As I slowly drive hoping to cool the engine, about a minute later the warning light comes on telling me to pull over to let the engine cool. So I give it 15 minutes to cool, and start my drive to visit my mother. Engine seems fine, no problems, no overheating. So after an hour and a half visit with my mother, I get in the car to drive home, which is about a 45 minute drive. I get on the freeway, drive about 10 minutes, no problem. I push my luck a little and turn on the air conditioning because it is very warm outside, no problem. And after about 30 minutes of driving, the pull over and shut your engine off warning light comes on again. So I'm certain it's not a fan problem. I believe it's a water pump problem, but I'm open to other theories. I do plan on taking it inMonday morning to have the dealership look at it, per my warranty.

It's probably the water pump. It's still working but intermittently.
What happens all is OK when you start out, but the car begins to overheats, because the pump can't do its job 100% of the time. You stop and the engine cools off, then you take off again and the situation repeats. You're lucky since you didn't have a complete failure. Soon you will. Get the kit and shove in a new one. |

I greatly appreciate the input. I think I can make it to the dealership tomorrow. I'm fairly certain this is covered by my extended warranty.

Ask the dealer if you want to do the thermostat replacement as preventive maintenance. The part alone is about $100 and the overlay labor is about $100 from my dealer, those will be out of your pocket but you might save a lot of labor if the thermostat gone shortly after waterpump.
