Warranty about to expire.
So original factory warranty is about to expire. Its an 08 135i w/ almost 46k miles. I'm taking the car in one last time before warranty expires. Mainly to have the passenger airbag sensor checked out. The passenger airbag light (the one next to the sunroof button) goes off about 30% of the time when my wife (105lbs) sits in the passenger seat. When the light does go on, no mater how she readjust her sitting position, the light stays on.
While I'm at the dealer, is there anything I should have them perform before my warranty expires? According to the car, I don't need an oil change for another 14k miles. Again car has 46k miles. I've also been thinking about extended warranties and extended maintenance. These are the warranties and maintenance quoted to me. 72month/100 mile maintenance plan $2,095 (seems high? when I purchase this for my 04 X3 7 years ago it was only $1,500). Worth it to pay $2,095 for two years of maintenance? The way I see it, its not worth it for just two oil changes. I would have to get some other major things changed too. I feel like I would probably reach maybe 70k miles by the time the 72months comes up. What are some maintenance that needs to be done between 46k miles and 70k miles? Here are the prices for different levels of extended warranties. Plat 84m/100k = $3900 Plat 84m/70k = $3500 Plat 72m/100k = $3380 Plat 60m/100k = $2850 Gold 72m/100k = $3040 Gold 84m/100k = $3490 Gold 84m/70k = $3140 Gold 60m/100k = $2580 Powwertrain 84m/100k = $2390 Powwertrain 84m/70k = $2180 Powwertrain 60m/100k = $1850 |

Plenty of life on both front and rear. I would guess 80% from visual inspection. Question. While scrolling through the dash computer, it came back with 38k mls for rear brakes and 30k mls for front brakes. I'm assuming that's how many miles I have left on the pads? How does the car know? Is there a sensor that measures the thickness of the pads on our cars?

Yes there is a break pad sensor, they are notorious for squeaking. I took mine in a few months back to have the sensors adjusted/replaced, and they replaced the rotors and pads for free in addition. May as well take it in, see if theyll do any goodwill service, when was the last time you had plugs and injectors checked out? Are you tuned?

Then you should def. have those checked out, even if the car is bone stock, the plugs should be replaced if they haven't been already at your mileage. New plugs make for a happy car.

I thought the car will tell when the maintenance schedule is. Would the dealership check the plugs and injectors just because I ask? Thanks for the help Pat

Since you had the 135i I would skip the maintenance program and go with the extended warranty instead, 135i is not cheap in repairs.

The owners manual and service manual do not agree on when to replace plugs. The service advisor I had questioned me because the car was not "telling" him the plugs needed replacing. But they did honor the owners manual maintenance schedule to replace the plugs at 45k. Be sure to force the issue because its a few hundred dollars to have it done.

Thermo stat, water pump gasket seal window regulator...... These were the common one I'm aware of. For 135i fuel pump & turbos plus other parts.

Turbos dont fail THAT often, and theyre actually not too brutal to replace out of pocket. Wastegates and hpfp have separate tsb claims, so your factory warrant doesnt matter there. Water pumps/thermostats can go bad on all bmws, and yes those are pricey. As with all warranties, you are hedging risk. I dont think theyre worth the cost, but its a close call.

I agree Pats. Its a crap shoot. The extended warranty that I would get if I get anything at all would be the is the gold pkg 7yr/100k = $3,500. Covers power train and a bunch of other stuff that I copy and pasted below from their PDF. From what my SA said the powertrain plus is pretty useless and that the gold pkg is better? That warranty will add another 3yrs and 54k miles. Hopefully I wouldn't need $3,500 in repairs in the next 3 years.
Powertrain Plus covers the major components on your vehicle and offers protection against many major mechanical breakdowns. Engine: Cylinder head(s) and cylinder block. All internally lubricated parts including: pistons, piston rings and pins; crankshaft, main and connecting rod bearings; connecting rods; camshaft and bearings; timing chains and/or belts; sprockets; rocker arms and shafts; valves, valve springs, upper spring plates (retainers); valve collets, guides, and seats; hydraulic valve clearance compensators (lifters); oil pump assembly. Dipstick assembly; vibration damper; flywheel/ring gear; upper and lower timing case covers; intake and exhaust manifolds; engine mounts; valve cover(s); oil pan. Automatic/Standard Transmission including Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) and Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT): Transmission case, torque converter, all internally lubricated parts contained within the transmission case including: all sprockets, shaft bearings, bushings, drums, pumps and valves. Transmission mount; flywheel; drive plate for torque converter. Coverage is not afforded for standard/SMG/DCT transmission clutch assemblies, which are subject to wear and tear. Final Drive Assembly, Propeller Shaft(s): Final drive housing; all internally lubricated parts contained within the final drive housing including: all sprockets, bearings and output shafts; CV joints; universal joints; front and rear hub assembly, hub bearings; propeller shafts. Transfer case (xDrive vehicles only): Transfer case, all internally lubricated parts contained within the transfer case including: all sprockets, shaft bearings, bushings, drums, pumps and valves. Transfer case mounts. Electrical: Alternator/generator; voltage regulator; starter motor, starter solenoid; engine control module; engine and transmission control modules. Cooling System: Water pump; radiator; fan clutch; coolant recovery tank; additional fan motor. Fuel System: Fuel injectors; Piezo injectors; fuel pumps (including high-pressure pump); metal and plastic lines and fittings; fuel injection and air flow sensors. Induction System: Turbocharger assemblies (vehicles so equipped). SCR (Selected Catalyst Reduction) emission control system (Diesel Models Only): Transfer pump, dosing module. Gold offers all the features of Powertrain Plus and more. Engine & Fuel System: Cylinder head(s), cylinder block and cylinder head gasket(s). All internally lubricated parts including: pistons, piston rings and pins; crankshaft, main and connecting rod bearings; connecting rods; camshaft and bearings; timing chains and/or belts; sprockets; rocker arms and shafts; valves, valve springs, upper spring plates (retainers); valve collets, guides, seats, and seals; hydraulic valve clearance compensators (lifters); oil pump assembly. Dipstick assembly; vibration damper; flywheel/ring gear; upper and lower timing case covers and gaskets; intake manifold and gasket; exhaust manifolds, engine mounts; valve cover(s) and gasket(s); oil pan(s) and gasket(s). Front and rear radial oil seats. (Fuel System): Fuel injectors; fuel pumps; metal and plastic lines and fittings; fuel tank; fuel injection and airflow sensors. Cooling System: Water pump; radiator; fan clutch and fan surround; idler pulley/ belt tensioner; coolant recovery tank; additional fan motor. The induction and cooling components are all that really worry me, i see very few problems with the trans (AT or 6mt) and not much in the way of big time engine problems...vanos every now and then, but that still seems quite rare, and the solenoids are not too bad to replace out of pocket. Things like injectors and plugs need work, but you wont be spending anything close to 3,500 on that type of stuff....its hard to say, but 3,500 in repairs would mean some seriously broken crap, put simply. I just see it like this: if the avg owner was seeing 3500+ in repairs out of factory 4/50k, bmw would never offer the extended warranty. Its piece of mind youre buying, and i doubt anyone here can/should put a price on that for you.

Shop around for that price, $3490 is MSRP (my dealer quoted me $50 over that). The group buy last year (no longer available) got the warranty for cost, which was $2840 for the 7/100 gold. |
