The e36 and e46 saloon and coupe seem to have almost identical rear seat width but the coupes appeared to have slightly reduced headroom in the rear due to a more sloping roofline. most of my mates and myself who have sat in the rear seats of the e36 and e46 sedan and coupes claim that the sedan and coupe were equally spacious. could this be due to the fact that the seats were much lower compared to the saloon? anybody with differing views?

You can maybe manage without the fifth seat but with that great lump of plastic, sorry that "console", how can you get across from one side to the other if both your rear seat passengers get in at the same side - which you often do from a safety perspective if parked in the road?

as a family man , i know the prev e36 and e46 coupes were great for ferrying 3 children in the rear - till pre teen. now the e92 will become less of a 'workhorse car' and more of a automotive showpiece. having said that, i think most people who buy coupes for style rather than practicality, i bought my e36 325i coupe when i was a bachelor.

Thank you. That is was I said previously. For anyone who has ever owned/driven a coupe, it's the coolest but that's until you have to let your rear passengers out. Even if you only have rear passengers occassioanlly it is dumb for both passenger and driver to have to get out the car. Letting passengers out the back is always awkward but now you have to from both sides. I guess we can't throw anything long in the backseat anymore either.

hi keve90sp. u have a point. the guy seating behind u / the driver has to come out though the drivers door with a 2+2 seating configuration. so if u have 2 passengers to drop off, u will have to remind the rear passenger to sit behind the front passenger or inconvenience yourself to get out, fold down your seat to let the poor guy out.

I used to have a 2+2, then the nagging of my wife made me get a full 5 seater 4-door sedan. I don't think anyone's ever been in the back. Bring on the 2+2.

I also bought my E36 325i coupe when I was a single but I remember it was a 5-seater and not differs from the 4-door apart from minus two doors and a slightly lower angle of C pillar. E92 is a completely different car than the E90, just like Benz C-class sedan and CLK-class coupe.

don't know why they didn't just make it a real coupe instead of the 2+2 version. Hate having to lift the seat to let someone out.

I was just watching the M6 video over again . Not many know but the M6 also has the divider in the rear. I presume the 6 series as well. I don't mind the divider I just wish it was like the 6, basically a cushion divider. I can imagine the plastic showing wear over the years just like what they say of the RX-8. The leg/feet dam area I guess we'll adjust to, but I think it's better executed in the 6 series.

yup, coupes can be inconvenient but they have the 'cool factor' that sedans do not have. u prefer to be seen in a coupe rather than a sedan for the image conscious. i saw the m6 coupe in the showrom today and the rear compartment is similiar 2+2. perhaps all bmw coupes will be 2+2 in the future and 2+3 has gone into extinction.

I agree there is a 'cool factor' of a 2-door , but that was the Saturady Night Fever John Tovolta time point of view.

I had had E36 coupe, a Prelude for 5.5 yrs and that is it. Ever since, I started to enjoy so much with 4-doors E-class, C-class, Accord and I must say I feel paranoid to go back to 2-door ( my Z3 was obviously an exception ).

The nasty moment with 2-door and 5 seats was to give somenone a lift in the thunder storm!

hi cntlaw. i must confess that as a 3 series fan, my favourite shape/ model of the range is the coupe . it is stylish, not ostentatious like the convertible and more sporty than the sedan. the 5 seater capacity was a real bonus for me previously. if coupe and the sedan were both available now, i would be so tempted to go for the coupe. it's looks have indeed grown on me in the last 3 months and the e92 m3 bodykit and rims give it potential to look less feminine and more masculine.

I forsee many scuffs on that console from shoes, buttons, belts, and other misc thrashings.

I've been in an E46 coupe and you can't exactly fit 5 people comfortably, hell in my car you can't fit 5 people comfortably, it doesn't matter the E92 is ugly anyways :P

i agree with u. the e36, e46 coupe were designed for 5 people but is more suited for 3 kids in the rear rather than three 6 footers.

I still remember back 1994, the time when I bought a preowned 1992 E36 325i coupe; the new car price of 325i coupe was even 0.5 % cheaper than the 4-door! (I had not been too update with the E46 though) I still recall back 2001 the time when I was shopping for either a W210 320 (E320) or a W208 Coupe (CLK320) and which the CLK is a perfect example of what 'cool factor' really is and it growled on me ever since. (the current generation CLK W209 is a bit feminine too). Yes, I would choose the E92 coupe if it was available 6 months ago but the significant price difference means I would only get the 328i E92. Due to the 4-seater aspects of CLK and E92, I forsee here, E92 will likely be the minority like the CLK.
