IT'S HERE-iPhone 4 snap in adapter

The dealer just called me, it's in and I'm on the way to pick it up.

I have been wondering about this. When you get the parts, can you post what you needed to hook it up, and photos of the installation? Is this the one that snaps into the arm rest or clips onto the dashboard? Both are of interest to me, just waiting for the unlock to be available so I can finally use my iPhone as a phone!

The part I got today simply snaps into the adapter that is installed in the arm rest. It uses the shark fin for the antenna, and also charges the phone as well as tying it into the audio system, instead of using blue tooth, it is wired in now.

I think you're mis-informed. The phone still uses bluetooth to use communicate to the car. Cradle or not.

Could you take a picture of your center console without the pop in adapter? Mine has no connections in it so I am curious how a pop in adapter will charge the phone. As far as people concerned with bt, it uses it to connect to the car, but from what I know, the signal is then routed through the antenna fin to increase call quality

If you don't have the factory installed pre-fittings (Smartphone Integration 6NF) in your armrest then the snap-in adapters are not compatible with your car.

I'm so confused.

So in order to use your iPhone through the car you have to order the BMW Assist/Bluetooth option, the Smartphone Integration option, AND THEN buy the Snap-In Adapter? Seems complicated.

I didn't order any of those options, I'm just curious (maybe if I had understood the features better I would've ponied up for 'em...).

Hey did you get part number "84 21 2 199 390" or which? Seems like there is one for bluetooth/charging, one for bluetooth/charging/music and one for bluetooth/charging/'media'...

Is Smartphone Integration included in the Premium Package?

It was not in my car. I have the premium pack with iPod/USB. The iPhone does charge using the USB connector and is controllable from the radio. I still have not decided the best way to connect stuff in the car. Thinking about it.

So, correct me if i'm wrong...the only functional difference between using the smartphone integration and the Y cable is that the Y cable doesn't make use of the sharkfin antenna?

No, it is a separate add on option that I believe is done at the factory. I don't think there is an easy fix or add on if your car was not built with it (at least that is what I have been reading on the forums)

That seems about right. I thought I read there may be issues charging on later production cars with the USB and as a result BMW released a power/usb adapter that goes inline with the Y cable. The link to the sharkfin antenna may be at best marginal, since the connection is passive; the dock connector does not provide a direct external antenna connection.

The iPhone 4 Bluetooth only cradle (p/n 84212199389) should work w/o 6NF smartphone integration but requires 639 BMW Assist w/ Bluetooth installed. Leads for power and antenna should be in the lower base of the armrest behind a cover facing the rear passenger side. Those leads plug into the eject-box (p/n 84109160935) which needs to be installed into the arm rest. The snap in module then plugs into the ejectbox. You get power and a passive antenna connection, and no more cables needed.

The iPhone 4 Bluetooth & 6NF cradle (p/n 84212199390) is for cars with BMW Assist w/ Bluetooth (639) and smartphone integration (6NF). Yes, its not a supported retrofit if the car does not come with 6NF from the factory. That will give you power, passive antenna connection, and USB connection to your phone.

I don't have the smartphone integration since I didn't want smartphone USB taking priority over my USB thumbdrive for media playback. I also figured I could have a number of USB thumbdrives vs. one iPhone for music.

I am confused... Can you have the dealer install or do whatever to make : my 128i w/o smartphone or bluetooth enabled to be compatible and enable those features? I am sure there is a way... but it may be costly...

Kinda confused

My car is on the way. I have BMW Assist w/Bluetooth and 6FL without smartphone integration. Doesn't this mean that I can just add the phone trim and eject box and plug it in and have 6NF? Is there more to it than that?

Then I need a snap-in for my iPhone.

I have an '08 135i which has the USB iPod integration and bluetooth for my current phone. I'm looking at getting a new iPhone 4S and I'm wondering if this snap in adapter will work? When I open my center console I have a shallow tray where the picture above shows the phone. Does that tray somehow come out and get replaced by this dock? If so how can I pull the tray out to see if I have the proper connections underneath?
