09 Deliveries are probably still a week or two away. Current deliveries are end-August builds, "09" are September onward.

The biggest difference is the all new iDrive which now has a non-moving, much bigger, higher res display and a 20GB (12 useable) hard drive. You only get the one DVD slot now too. Highlights include the new shortcut button system and topographical mapping.
Other changes are a couple of minor improvements to some engine parts, new smart phone USB interface and the replacement of SGM by space grey. If your car was built past the middle of September it will definitely be a '09.

Space grey = MY 09. Unless it was a BMW personal (and you'd have to be crazy to ay for that)

The new idrive appears to be a mystery. The 09 model apparently starts with the September build but my dealer believes the new idrive doesn't start in Australia until October build cars. It seems pointless and more complicated to continue with the old model for one month after the rest of the world charged. The last time I looked at the Australian BMW configurator the new idrive was pictured so assume we will get it sometime!!!

So does the new iDrive screen not fold down anymore? is it permanently fixed in place?

Yes it is a fixed screen. No more folding. Much bigger screen than before.

I guess I'll have to see before making a decision on whether I like it or not.

I think the thought process was that it is now too big to fold. And I find that I always have something to display. If I'm not using the nav then it is displaying the radio or what I am playing off the HDD. And you can still turn the screen off if you really want to.

Wait till you see it. It really doesn't stick up that much. I don't understand why people don't like it. When I'm sitting in the drivers seat I can still see the bonnet in front of the iDrive screen so it definitely doesn't block your vision.

I would be guessing it was cost driven .
Audi did it with their S3's and VW with golfs (GTi and R32s). Initial launch cars had certain interior materials then as a running update those materials were substituted... for poorer quality stuff.. just a thought. |
