SCCA Solo Classing for 1-Series
The SEB made a decision about Street Prepared classing for the 1-Series and provisional classing for Stock Class has leaked as well:
TECH BULLETINS 1. Street Prepared: The following new listings, effective immediately upon publication, have been recommended by the SPAC and approved by the SEB: • BMW 335, 328 (‘06+) BSP • BMW 135, 128 (‘08+) BSP So it's B Street Prepared for those that modify with as little as larger width front wheels, camber plates, or rear swaybar. STOCK CLASS (semi-official rumor) D-Stock for BMW 135, 128 ('08+) That's what the Rio Grande Region Solo Director has declared based on a email response from SCCA National Solo Technical.

I just don't think the 1-Series will very competitive in D Stock. Maybe in a region if the 1-Series driver is top notch and no other D Stock drivers match up. Forget Nationals unless you want to just go for fun.
A 135i built to full B Street Prepared class limits could be promising in the right hands though. But that build level would not be street friendly. I'm just going to go out have have some fun learning to drive a front under-tired, camber limited car for the 2008 season and not be concerned with being class competitive.

New models that have no performance history can result in strange classing that is occasionally changed in subsequent seasons.

That's the April FasTrack. Nothing about the 1 series in there for Stock classing, yet. We're waiting... but it does mention the BSP classing. I think D Stock could be optimistic, maybe? The 135i compares well in stats to the E46 330, except that the 135i makes about 70 more hp. Seems odd to put them both in D Stock but there's not really a better class for the 135i, so maybe that will stick. Not like its gonna be able to use that additional power with NO LIMITED SLIP. As for BSP, you can at least add flares to run wider wheels on these cars in that class, as well as adding a limited slip, ditching the stock exhaust and upping the boost. Could be a real screamer in BSP! If the car wasn't so damned heavy... :iono: It will be interesting to see a full tilt BSP effort in a 135... I wonder how much fat you could trim out? Will be able to get close to the E36 M3 LTW? Not a chance. But it might be "close enough" once the power seats, stock wheels, and heavy exhaust are replaced with proper racing bits. Might be a few years before anyone digs into a 135 that hard though... This assumes, of course, that the SEB follows through with the March FasTrack proposal to move the AWD EVO and STi out of BSP... |

Evo and STI are already in A Stock, but in B for Street Prepared.

I'll be really surprised the SEB is thinking DS for the 135i. Seems like it should be FS like the 335i. But a better fit might be AS or BS honestly.
I could see the 128i going to DS with the 330 though...that would make sense. If the 135i goes to DS, I think it might have a more than decent chance at trophies even without a real LSD. A 330i was able to trophy last Sept...a 1nner weighs less than 100lb more and has 75hp & 85 lb-ft over the 330i...plus is 4" shorter, which is good for slaloms and Chicago boxes. |

That guy... he, umm.... died. Yea, that's the ticket. As for the BSP move for the EVO/STi, its way past time for this to happen. If they move the AWD boost buggies up it will give the M BMWs a home in Street Prepared again. We're already anxiously eyeing a S54 powered Z3 M Coupe for BSP build-up... but the 135 BSP build would be a lot of fun, too! |

mikeo, since your car seems to be an ideal optioned car for autocross, do you have access to car scales? We're really curious how much the car actually weighs without tons of options.

The only scale I can use is at the city dump, which I think is only accurate to about +/-50lbs. When I pick the car up this week I'll try to stop by there and weigh it.

We've done "Dealership Weigh Days" before with some local dealers for new car models (we weighed 5 option package variations of the EVO IX when it was released, above), and when we do we always remove the spare tire (if equipped) and calculate the fuel load and back that out for an accurate "race weight". All of our local BMW dealerships "over option" all new models and its hard to get an accurate weight on a low optioned one, though. (we still need to do this - they just got their first 1 series cars at the end of last week) If anyone has a 1 series (esp. 135i with low options!) in the Dallas area please send me a PM, as we'd love to corner weigh one of these at our shop, as well. I'll even test fit some wheels if you stop by (and weigh the stock "run flat anchors"). We're looking for an E92 M3 also. Thanks, |

BTW...that kicker box I bought off you to help pay for the IROC paint job is still working and in my family. This is Robert...had the TR-4a. I just saw that there is going to be a 40th TAMSCC Reunion next week. Wish I'd known earlier...would have figured out a way to come out. Say hey to everybody for me. Mikeo...there's probably someone in your SCCA region who has some decent scales. Maybe at your next autox or region meet you can ask to see who has a set. |

We are a very poor region, but I think a couple of the road race guys have scales.

SCCA Class Notification Link
Here is a link to the SCCA FastTrack documents where we will first see "Official" word on Classes for the 1 Series
http://www.scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=78 The April edition contains the previously confirmed BSP, but still no word on stock class. I agree with the above discussion that 128i may land in D Stock, but I bet the 135i ends up elsewhere like B Stock. If the 135i DOES end up in D Stock, it will be a strong contender. |
