spare tire

Does BMW make a skinny spare tire for some of the older cars? Porsche had a high profile on a skinny 17 inch wheel and I am wondering if anything like that is available.

Also, Friday I am taking some Porsche wheels and tires up to Radial Tire and doing a fit check in the 135I. To bad they don't match the bolt pattern; but it will be interesting to see if they fit in the car.

I think most if not all BMW's now come with run flat tires or rft's. If you've got a flat, you can still drive on it.

correct -- I understand that; but, what if I want to put some high performance tires on that are not RFT's? Before RFT's, did BMW use the skinny spare or the inflatable?

My 318ti has the small "donut" space-saver spare mounted under the rear of the car. I will probably try to test fit it on the 135 to see if it would work. If so, I'm going to go to the junk yard and pick a second one up because I'll be swapping the RFT's as soon as I wear them out (which I'm going to work very hard at... !).

I figure for long trips, the little donut won't take up all that much trunk space and it would definitely provide some serious peace of mind.

Whiplash -- thanks, do you think BMW might have had an intermediate step in the evolution of the spares? i.e., Porsche evolution, full size spare ==> inflatable donut spare ==> skinny wheel and high pressure tire ==> RFT.

e.g., The original spare that came with my 911 came with a 15 inch wheel and inflatable donut. The Boxster had a narrow 17" wheel with a high pressure skinny tire. The 15" wheel will not fit over the brakes on the 911; but the Boxster spare will.

I tried to fit my steel donut wheel from my 332ti onto my e90, adn it doesn't clear the brakes. I would think that with the even larger brakes on the 1 series, you're not going to get it to fit on there.

Also, the well in the trunk of the e82 has the battery in it, and will not accommodate the donut spare. You guys might be better off with the M Mobility Kit, which the M cars have, in combination with having non-runflats.

Thanks Larryn, that is why I was wondering about the evolution of the spare. I would not expect one of those old style donut spares to fit; but, the skinny high pressure spare developed for later cars should fit.

Also, nothing will fit in that boot thing next to the 300 pound battery. One of the biggest batteries I have seen in a car.

Larry, I know the 'donut' is concave in shape, was there any way to mount it "backwards" so that it didn't have to wrap around the brakes? I'm not sure if that would cause it to stick out too far and rub the fender?

I knew it wouldn't fit in the well of the 135 but (if it would actually clear the brakes/fender) I figured I would just keep it in the trunk on long trips. If there's no way to get it to fit the hub though, I guess that's a moot point.

Smile Jack to change possible spare tire?

My wife and I just picked up our 135i Wednesday night..... I have been so busy at work that I haven't even driven it yet (wife got to drive this one home)! And after looking into the trunk I see a reasonably large vacant area to the left of the battery which comes with a small pouch that holds the tow hook, a screw driver, and a small open end wrench. So I suspect that the rest of the world that may get by without run flats might just have a jack stored in that location. Does anybody know what type of jack could fit if not a factory version for another country? I would like to purchase some sort of spare for long distance travel. In the Dallas area where we live the 50 mi limit on run flats is no big deal. But what about cross country with a very non standard tire in service? I would purchase some sort of back up wheel / tire combo but would love to not have to carry a small floor jack. And come to think of it..... I have not had time to crawl around under it to see where the jack points might be, and possibly locate any jack alignment holes. Any ideas anyone?

PS Ours is in Monaco Blue with Taupe leather interior, with premium and sport packages along with the upgraded radio. The radio sounds and operates like the very nice radio we have in our 2007 MCS......

E60s and E46 cabrios have donut spares. Whether or not they fit an E8x is not known. I'd imagine an E60 spare would clear our brakes, since the 550i has massive front calipers.

A 195/55-R16 6.5Jx16EH2+ 42mm IS (p/n: 36 11 6 777 784) steel wheel is available for snow tires, but I seriously doubt it will fit a 135i.

@Tirerack I just priced out 5-17" aluminum wheels, 5-Dunlop M3 205/50/17" snows with TPMS sensors, Hunter mount/balance, shipping for $1,500. Now I want to find a LIGHTWEIGHT jack.

And a donut tire for summer when the OEM RUN-CRAPS wear out. Which won't take long.

Anyone know if this will fit in that little space next to the battery? any measurments of the space or a standard jack?

I wonder how much this jack kit weighs?
Now we need to find a lightweight small space saver spare. I WON'T get another set of RUN-CRAP tires once the stock ones wear out. Hopefully a light spare and jack won't weigh more then 50#. I hate extra weight. Maybe I will never fill the gas tank to make up for this added weight. Minus 5 gallons of gas will make up for most of a spare and jack. -5 gallons of gas aprox -40#.

I'd be real careful with the BMW jack. It looks very much like the OEM E46 unit which is the flimsiest jack I've ever used.

Personally, I carry a 12v compressor and tire plugs, but it's your call.

1. I have that toolkit. The jack is FAR STURDIER than the OEM BMW jacks - it won't replace a floor jack, but it will get you out of a bad spot with more safety than the flimsy E46 piece.

2. BMW makes a 17" steel donut spare that came with certain E46 cars and currently with the X3. I don't have the P/N but it should not be hard to find.

3. Leatherz above sells the donut spare with a 15mm (?) spacer, longer bolts as a kit for the E9x cars (including the 335 which has larger diameter rotors than the 135). I would imagine this combination would work in the 135.
http://leatherz.com/Merchant2/mercha...egory_Code=E90

So if you want a slim spare, this is the way to go. Either buy the kit from LeaterZ or order yourself the wheel from the dealer, and buy one 15mm spacer. Note: They don't specify the spacer thickness on their website but it should be easy to find out, either from them or from Rogue (the manufacturer).

Maybe thats a great idea for somebody who knows how to repair a tire. I myself have never used plugs or ever repaired a tire. I have heard many people say what you have, which sounds like the best idea. I guess I will take a class on tire repair. :iono:

Hey guys. The Spare tire kit I offer does not require the spacer on the 135i. You can use the spare I sell or the one from the X3 which is larger and takes up more space in the trunk.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

What does this kit consist of ? A spare donut tire and a jack ?

How much, how much does it weigh ? This is a must IMO.

Run-crap tires suck, and no spare sucks worse

That's good to know, Andy, but further product info, prices, etc. need to be taken to the Commercial sub-forum, please.

Patching a tire is easy. The hardest part is finding the hole.

You take a reamer tool, and clean the hole out. Then you take the tool that looks like a big needle, stick the plug halfway through it, fold in half, jam into the hole 3/4 of the way, pull the needle out, and cut off the excess. Pump up tire, and go. You can get a good vulcanizing tire patch kit, including tools, for $10.
