My engine blew up!

Had my car in the shop for a check engine code. They told me that the intake was carboned up and they would do a walnut blasting to clean up the system. They did the blasting and were getting ready to do a road test. The mechanic said that the car would not start after a few attempts. They finally got it to turn over but it immediately back fired and they heard a loud KLUNK. The piston in cylinder 6 exploded. When they looked into the intake, they saw a rod which is not supposed to be there. I am now waiting for a long block replacement. If the engine is here in the states, it will be a week or two, if the engine has to come from Germany then it might be 4 weeks or more.

The only good part is that the engine will be new along with the ancillary parts.

What a bummer! At least I'll be driving a 5 series until mine gets finished.

Hmmm, two engines in one week. I know you have a different engine but my new 128i engine was ordered from the motherland yesterday and is due to arrive in the US in three weeks.

Sounds like the Tech screwed up big time. Glad to hear they are covering it for you.

So your tech completely smoked the motor....."found a rod in the intake" doesn't even begin to make sense as a plausible outcome. I mean theoretically speaking a rod could decide to run away and come out of the block, but just hanging out in the manifold? No way.

They screwed it up, hence their willingness to goodwill a brand new motor. Oh well at least the story ended well OP.

I agree with you but that requires almost comical negligence. You'd need a ton of walnut media to create a compression issue. I don't doubt it for a second, but man that's just brutal.

Hahahahahahahahahaha. I'm glad they're covering you without you needing to fight it, but how. The. Fuzz. I'm really trying to figure out how that.

Never mind, there's too much in the world that doesn't make sense for this to be in my brain.

Still... Now I'm just wondering if a bottle or a pipe is to blame for this negligence.

Wow definitely putting my money on the tech messing something off when he had the intake manifold off!

No fault of the walnut blasting, i would say the Tech stuffed up, probably on his mobile phone and not focused on the job.

If that happened in my shop he would be down the road

Jesus.. I just got a reminder, "Bring in your car for service" letter in the mail yesterday as it's been a year..

Just changed the oil again a few weeks back and other sundry items. I'm quite happy with the motor, but it seems that the new N5x slots are playing quite loose these days..

Hmmm..

Exactly! I have always done my own work on anything and everything I have owned with only 1 exception, I had a timing chain jump on my truck mid winter, snowed a lot that year and even if I had a way to get it in the garage, it would not fit, so I let a shop replace the timing chain, they didn't get it timed right, it leaked oil and the water pump seal went all while accelerating to get on the highway, ended up spinning a rod bearing and trashing the motor, they never admitted fault and I ended up getting screwed badly. Never again will I let anything keep me from working on my own stuff.
Glad the OP appears to be getting taken care of!
