why is it so hard?
Driving home this afternoon, i thought i felt a bit of a shudder under acceleration. Acceleerating again, i felt it again ... and then it happened. The dreaded engine fault message on the screen. "engine fault, reduced power. you may continue your journey but drive moderately and get your car checked by the nearest BMW service centre" or words to that effect. after having my long cranks "fixed" a couple of months ago by a "software update" it looks like my HPFP has gone.
So I limp home (car sounded terrible - does limp mode equal only 3 cylinders going or something?) and call Dealer A service department and explain that I have the engine fault light on my 135i. to which they say "the earliest we can fit you in is the 7th" 2 WEEKS AWAY??!?!?! after saying that was very disappointing and am i supposed to drive around with this fault i was put on hold and then told they could fit me in - for diagnosis only - next Monday. next Monday?!?! so I said I would try another dealer service department - they said to let them know if i was able to get in earlier at the other dealer so they could cancel my appointment. So much for that negotiating tool. So I ring dealer B and explain what is happening - to which I was asked if I have stopped the car and tried restarting the engine coz that usually clears it. I said no, I haven't done that I want it checked and fixed ASAP ... he responded that the earliest they could fit me in is next Wednesday!!!!! I said I already had a booking with dealer A for Monday so I would keep that. There was no effort to try and accommodate me any earlier. I guess I am supposed to drive what is effectively a ticking timebomb until the HPFP actually stops - which will happen when I am on my way to a client meeting no doubt - and I have to call roadside assistance to tow me somewhere? seriously? Hopefully it won't start tomorrow morning and I get get it resolved ... /end rant |

Sounds like the HPFP. However, when you restart the car it should be ok. But the important thing is to drive the car very conservatively. If you put the fuel pump under pressure then it will fail to deliver the fuel and set off the error code.

That's unfortunate mate. It's a shame they can't get you in earlier. You should be top priority in situations like this. I hope it gets resolved for you asap. I would call up again tomorrow if I were you. I've been experiencing long cranks every day for the past 3 months. The reliability side of things for the HPFP really does suck.

Sorry to hear mate
If you feel comfortable saying which dealerships have u been dealing with.... I find the same poor service when i try and book my car in for serious issues. a 2 week wait is unacceptable for these sorts of issues |

Name and shame the dealers (or stealers?).
I'll start; I've always tried going to BMW Sydney (they're 2 blocks away from work!) but like you... I always get told 3-4 weeks for a booking and 4-5 weeks for a loan car. WHAT?! How one plans life that far in advance when you use a car for work is anyone's guess. So, I had been servicing at another dealer. For a warranty item I took to the car to Sydney BMW and was told it was the other dealer's issue as they serviced it and hence they couldn't repair it, or else I'd need to pay. What?! After a nice word with BMW HQ (you should try them) I was given the car back repaired under warranty. Then most recently I left two voice messages for a return call and also two emails to book a service (Oil Change distance to go dramatically dropped). No reply. Booked in with Canterbury BMW. Cheaper and done without questions, with another warranty repair item. So... go figure. Sydney BMW is owned by BMW Australia yet it seems their Franchise dealerships are doing better in service. Sometimes I just wish BMW would take a look at Lexus and Mercedes Benz for after-sales ownership experiences.

I'm also highly unimpressed by BMW Sydney. Similar experiences to the previous post. Without admitting any deficiencies in their service, my sales assistant there has tried to help out as much as possible. So kudos and thanks to him, but overall service there is woeful.
BMW Sydney really needs a kick up the arse. |

One of my friend tried this line and worked - "If you are not having it sorted by xxx, I am going to change it to a Merc/Audi/Porsche". For that instance, he did say Merc.

... To assist all on this forum.. we all know the great work Southern BM do for our cars in Melbourne. Does anyone know any 3rd party BMW Specialists in the other states / major cities?
This in turn can help those who are sick of dealing with the hassles of the dealership for general maintenance items e.g oil change, brake pads etc... |

thanks guys. after not having to use the car for a couple of days I started it today and it is running OK ... didn't push it though. I am thinking of just driving around on the weekend to try and make it fail so I can get roadside assistance to tow it to the dealer and I can say I told you so.

Went to the dealer this morning. Mentioned to him that the car faults every time I drive it (it faulted before I got to the end my street this morning). He said that was good and it should make it easier to diagnose! No loan car available - I even asked if they had a demo car available. nothing. Pretty hard for me to get from the dealer to work in North Ryde ... so I said i would wait. Took about an hour for him to confirm that yes the HPFP is stuffed and I can bring it back next Monday to get it replaced. I asked if it was safe to drive it he said yeah it was fine - it will just keep faulting randomly until they replace the HPFP and re-program the car.
After leaving the dealer I drove up a decent sized hill. Was in 2nd, had no power and had to change into left lane to let people pass me! The shame! On the positive side (sort of) he did say that there was a service notice for the rear lights so they would fix that up too. |

My experience with them today with my car was nothing short of an absolute pleasure. I literally parked in the lot, walked in to reception. Told them i needed an inspection on the car and they took it straight into service. Service dropped everything, put Christine on the hoist and told me it was OK to drive and a damage brief. Took about 15 minutes. They obviously charged nothing and would not get any business out of even doing the check, but they did it fast and easily. Really appreciated their fantastic service today. |
