135 Brake Cooling Kit
After a year I am finished testing the kit on our race car and am now ready to sell them. Anyone who knows how to change their brakes can easily install this system and the great thing is you can take it off after a weekend at the track and never know it was there. I developed this system because as the track guys know we severely needed cooling for our brakes and ducting is the best way to do it (at least from my experience with Grand-Am and Club Racing) but I didn't want to do something where the dealer could easily question what people with non race cars were doing to their car by making any permanent mods (cutting plastic,etc. Those of you with race cars don't have to worry about this). After testing many designs for rotor backing plates and air intakes one of my simpler designs was actually yielding the best results(figures, lol). After getting brakes up to about 550* I am getting 18%-19% lower temps on inner part of the rotor/pad contact area and about 11%-12% cooler temps on the outer(temp tests were first performed with just the rotor backing plates removed from both sides to make sure temps were the same on both sides and they were within 2% of each other consistently, I then installed the ducting kit on one side and took temps comparing each side after many severe braking points. I ran the tests about 20 times to make sure I was getting consistent temps). I also finally got these out on the track for a few weekends and the pad wear is dramatically less. I used to go through a whole set of front pads per event and now only go through a little more than a half a set. So that's the great news.....the bad news is that the materials are VERY expensive for this, especially the intakes as they are custom made. My total cost for a kit to me is about $250(intakes alone are $75 each). Kits like this typically sell for $700+ but I am just looking to get my costs back and these are not cosmetically exactly perfect kits, ie. metal is cut by hand instead of machine, etc. but does not effect performance of ducting, just looks. However they still look very professional but you will never see the ducts when looking at car from outside)

Test Kits
I have a few other people testing this kit right now and they have been seeing similar results as I have been seeing with brake wear. Also, I will need at least five orders before I produce another run as I have to order intake ducts in bulk else they cost about 50% more.

This is pretty cool. How long would you say the install would take for a complete noob? I've installed stuff in the engine bay and I've installed my old axleback, but I don't have experience with the brake/wheel well area. I'm interested, but I still have warranty for another couple years so I won't be tracking the car hard enough just yet.. but this is something I want to keep in mind for the future.

Takes me about 20 minutes to install when swapping out front pads. So, to do cooling ducts and pads takes me about 40 minutes. I would say the first time it shouldn't take you more than 30 mins to install ducts.
Those who I sent the first sets out to a few weeks ago. Please post your reviews on this thread when you have a chance. Thanks |
