That's not funny...I noticed a screw in my tire that caused a small leak...I was in a COMA for 3 months!

I was on my way to work, running late and I got a flat tyre, front left. The RFT did it's job and I was able to get there and drive back home so I was very happy. My only issue with runflats is that they wear out very fast and are very costly. I simply cannot justify the cost. If I was driving a normal car it wouldn't be so bad but on a sports car they aren't designed to be efficient. Also, after switched to RE-11's I realised how sub-par they were in terms of comfort and performance, although when they were new the RFT gripped very well in the dry.

They are a great innovation IF you prefer rock hard ride, road noise, non communicative steering response, road noise, and poor tread life. Not my favorite thing BMW does.

Sorry--one man's opinion. For the once in 3 years you might need em, you are forced to live with alot of compromises.

You couldn't pay me enough money to put run-flats back on my car. They're overpriced, underperforming, harsh riding, noisy tires and BMW should be shot for pushing them on us.

my goodness, am I supposed to get a new tire?
I would do that but mine's puncture was right in the tread. Maybe I should ask a bmw technician!

it seems that the 3rd genaration of RFTs is already out there. anyone has tested them?

Tokyo (March 3, 2009) — Bridgestone Corporation today announced it has successfully developed new technologies and related it’s practical applications that improve the riding comfort of run-flat tires*1 Bridgestone will begin marketing this “third generation” of run-flat tires in 2009, focusing on sales to original equipment manufacturers for installation in new passenger vehicles.

As environmental awareness grows worldwide, automakers are accelerating the introduction of lighter, smaller vehicles. In response to that trend, Bridgestone is confident that its third-generation run-flat tires will significantly advance the use of run-flat tires by original equipment manufacturers, thereby accelerating the elimination of spare tires (emergency-use tires) in passenger vehicles. The company believes that further popularizing the safe and environment-friendly run-flat tires can make a major contribution to society.

According to Bridgestone, while there are various ways to eliminate spare tires the company believes that run-flat tires are the best way of eliminating spare tires because of significant advantages offered by them, including:

Improved driving stability when the tire punctures
Greater peace of mind as it avoids the need to change tires in dangerous places, such as on highways
Continued mobility not only when punctures damage the tire tread in contact with the road surface, but even when punctures damage the tire sidewalls
Eliminating spare tires from all vehicles would help save resources by reducing the approximately 59 million*2 spare tires annually. Furthermore, CO2 emissions over the spare tire lifecycle—from raw material procurement to disposal—could be lowered by approximately 2 millions tons of CO2 per year.*3 Additional CO2 emissions can be reduced by the elimination of wheels for the spare tires.

I had a blowout in CT on a business trip. Not only did I get stranded overnight, but BMW of North Haven (CT) charged me $659 to replace one front tire.

It's crazy we don't have a choice on tires, I understand the desire of not having a spare but other cars come without spares and without RFT's...I am also looking foward to replacing mine with real summer performance tires.

In my sister's MB C-Class there is no spare but instead there's a kit with an electrical air pump...

i hate these tires. Ever since i bought my car these RFT are nothing but crap. They go flat every month and a half or so. BMW dealer says that it is normal for the light to go on every month to two. Ive never seen a crappier car than what BMW makes. I actually bought a tire gauge and realize it was only 1 tire. BMW dealer gave me the BS that it is normal for only 1 tire to loose so much pressure that the light goes off every month every single month. Any advice on what i should do or who else i should talk to? Ive talk to the manager at the service dept, and he gave me the same BS. I msg corp BMW, they told me to talk to the manager.

Guys I just talked to a Bridgestone dealer, a friend of mine actually, he gets the 3rd Gen RFTs. now when I asked about the price, he told be that of course it will depend on the size but the difference in price over non RFT tires is a bit less than 20%.

I wonder why it is that much expensive in the US!

I was getting ripped off by the dealer selling me the replacement tire. I knew it at the time, talked to them about it, and they were like "too bad - that's what we are charging you". They had me "over the barrel" (no other better choices) and knew it.
