Not in the US Part system. I am planning on getting one for myself the next time I get parts from Europe.

Vent Grill Removal

Could someone please post more detailed instructions for removing the drivers side vent grill. I know to pull up, but where do I pull from? Do I need a tool like a spatula to slip between the grill and dash? Also it looks like the grill will catch on the wheel that controls the airflow direction.

I want to install the switch but not do any damage.

Thanks

Pull straight up is all the advise I can give you. It felt like it was going to break when I did it, but it was fine. I gripped along the edge and was able to pull up without any tools. I think I went from the middle, it may be better to start at one end and work your way to the other. Give me a call if you want to talk it through over the phone.

Sorry I can’t help more than that.

I put the switch in tonight but I will tell you the instructions listed here can get you into trouble. The vent box is designed to remove in one piece do not remove the grill by itself as it is very easy to break trying to force it on or off.

The grill itself is held on by a series of tabs that lock the grill to the vent box. There are four tabs holding in the vent box, two on each side, which you can access through the grill. Using a small screwdriver or Exacto knife pull the tabs in towards the center of the vent while pushing the vent box up. Work it back and forth carefully and the entire assembly will come out providing access to the two screws on the dash panel.

The entire vent assemble snaps in easily, slide it in and back working the foam seal in under the dash. Once it bottoms out press in down and it will snap into place.

I was very careful but managed to break the mounting tabs on the grill in several spots.

ANDY.............Thanks...I received my switch today and 20 minutes later it was in and actually functional . Meaning that I didn't screw anything up.
I did however use the mchaskell method for the vent removal as his description of the "grille only" removal caused ripples of fear to radiate up and down my spine. His whole vent box removal method is extremely easy and caused no damage to anything.
Now all I need is some serious fog to go out and drive around in .

Received mine today and already installed. I used the supplied instructions and all went to plan. Works great. When lit, the lights are quite bright! This is a must mod for anyone that lives in areas that can fog or even areas with heavy rain. Once I start showing this mod to other 135i owners in the area Andy will get more orders!

You don't get the fancy button with the picture that illuminates but you get rear fogs for free!

Just installed the switch I bought from Andy with the instructions from Andy. Worked like a charm. The vent popped out unexpectedly easily. Nothing broken.

+1. For sure the best bang for the buck mod for the US 1er. An absolute must. BMW should be flogged for not including this switch. Hell even my '02 A4 had this function as standard, and I gladly paid the extra $100 to have an operational rear fog light in my '05 MINI S.

I did my old e90 today (trial run for the 1er) , really easy. It worked great, but I thought it didn't at first, as the lights have to be on full before the rear fogs will come on. So if you use "auto" on the lights it only works when the lights are on, or when you switch the dial hard-right to the "on" position.

I went with the Lego mod, two normal barrel pieces, two "studs", and the three piece rectangle. It fits perfectly, and the cavity inside the light switch literally holds the Lego at the right angle to contact both switches inside. Very cool !!
